“I love when a piece feels more like a thing than a work of art, and transcends medium for the sake of performing its message. While looking through the vast array of artists showing this year during Dumbo Open Studios, I found myself slowing down when I came across works that confused me or would require me to look closer into simply seeing what it’s made of. Even though some of these works might exist comfortably in the worlds of paintings, sculpture, ceramic, assemblage… The works by these six artists pushed away from the parameters and expectations of art genres. Often employing multiple mediums like painting on sculpted forms, using symbols and text as brush stroke or found objects as punctuation. These artists are skirting definability by bouncing back and forth between material and meaning. Assemblage and collage are exciting mediums because they celebrate infinite additive possibilities.” - Jesse Greenberg

James Howard Collins
Head a few blocks east of the main DUMBO Open Studios action and visit the historic Vinegar Hill neighborhood to enjoy the charming buildings and Belgian block-lined streets, where you’ll find a generous variety of art on view.
Vinegar Hill artists are putting on quite a show this year. James Howard Collins and Megan E. Weber recently moved into studio space above the GAIA Gallery. Collins’ lush gouache paintings, large graphite drawings & wire sculptures are paired with Weber’s fine art prints of long exposure & environmental photography. Ursula Clark, artist & proprietor of GAIA Gallery, will be showing all new work celebrating Earth Day & nature including 3D installations and printed word in the main gallery. Down the block, Vivian Scott has been prolifically creating hundreds of small, daily paintings plus large, vibrant, acrylic abstractions. While Steve Woodburn has been producing brilliant, digital, inkjet paintings in their colorful studios at 52 Hudson.
Weather permitting Megan E. Weber will set up a booth on the corner of Hudson Ave & Water Street (across from the café) and direct visitors to nearby studios while selling her popular cityscape cards and prints of various sizes.

2 new exhibitions at Klompching Gallery now on view:
“Eli Craven: Soap Opera” and “David Van Dartel: This Time Tomorrow”.
“Soap Opera” is Eli Craven’s second exhibition at the Klompching Gallery. For this exhibition, we present artworks from his Soap Opera series, and other recent works.
“I work conceptually with photographic images by re-evaluating the physical and psychological potential of the picture through sculptural and digital interventions. The works exist somewhere between the image and object, attempting to connect the representation to some form of reality.”—Eli Craven
This Time Tomorrow brings together a selection of ten color photographs from two of the photographer’s acclaimed projects—On Vlieland and What Once Was—that explore an intimate portrayal of friendship and masculinity.
Initially exploring and documenting his close circle of friends on Vlieland, a remote island in the north of The Netherlands, Van Dartel then photographed subjects as he travelled across several European countries; constructing a vivid portrait of young adults, and raising questions about male friendship and the classical discourse of masculinity.
