Canons have their place and we respect the right of the paper of record to assert its vaunted cultural power (broadly bourgeois, late to every good party, kind of clueless and, as of late, comfortable in covering for genocidal regimes) in issuing its 100 best books of the 2000s list. There are lots of good ones on there!
All attempts at canonization require relentless response. Here's ours, a non-exhaustive list of 13 books published in the 2000s we think the Times overlooked. We picked them because we loved the voice, or because they moved millions to take social action, or because they're the best wayfinders we've come across in these truly crazy times.
Which of your favorites need some shine?

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we'll welcome Dr. Antoine Johnson for a talk on Black AIDS activism in the Bay Area, a critical piece of recent history that has been overlooked in most narratives of the time.
About Dr. Johnson and his work:
Dr. Antoine Johnson earned his Ph.D. in the History of Health Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco. His dissertation, “More than Pushing Pills: Black AIDS Activism in the Bay Area, 1981-1996,” explored ways in which Black grassroots organizers confronted HIV/AIDS and structural-medical racism that exposed their communities to infection. His research interests include the AIDS epidemic, anti-Black racism in medicine, twentieth-century American History, and hip-hop culture.
Dr. Johnson will provide insight into his research on Black AIDS activism in the Bay Area, while also confronting ways in which the Black AIDS experience has been overlooked. Focusing primarily on Black s*x workers, Dr. Johnson argues that AIDS is exacerbated by structural and medical racism that has led to the erasure and stigma of African Americans experiencing what Cathy J. Cohen calls
"secondary marginalization," including not only s*x workers but also Black gay men, le****ns, and people who use drugs. Their contributions to the history of AIDS activism challenges how we remember the Bay Area's AIDS epidemic.
