The creation EagleBeak Galleries was inspired the words of this renown horticulturalist considered to be the founder of American Landscape Architecture. Like Downing, we believe that the natural beauty which surrounds us plays a crucial role in a quality life. His childhood was spent in his father’s tree nursery and by his teens he became a prolific garden writer. While 19th century European sentiments still reserved gardens for royalty, Downing’s readers were wealthy and middle class alike. The natural world needed to be humanized. Seemingly, the urban populous was seeking some repose from the harsh realities of an increasingly industrializing United States. His aesthetic influences surpassed his prodigious botanical knowledge. Despite an early death, he would become an arbiter of taste and theorized that through aesthetics a nation could develop moral character. Downing’s contention was that any civil society needs fine gardens and indeed gardens would create upstanding citizens. His ideas included the private, “cottage,” garden and large public gardens. In fact, he was the first to suggest the concept of New York’s Central Park.
