StringTime
StringTime is a fun beginner violin/viola/cello and guitar summer camp in Burke and Alexandria, VA.
And just like that, our inaugural StringTime guitar camp is in the books.
Enjoy “Yellow Submarine” from our final concert. StringTime Director and Cellist Lourdes de la Peña even played along!
Most of these students had never touched a guitar before coming to camp. In just 5 days, they learned the string names, some chords, basic rhythms, and to play in a group.
StringTime Guitar Camp Day 4 ✅
We believe that students are inspired to learn great music by listening to great music. That’s why we end everyday of camp by playing a fun piece for our students.
🎵 Hakuna Matata from The Lion King
StringTime Guitar Camp Day 3 ✅
Today, we studied Sister Rosetta Tharpe in music history class. Originally from Arkansas, she was the first to mix sacred and secular music into a new genre — gospel. Her music influenced Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. She is known as the “godmother of rock and roll.”
Our featured guitar player of the day was Charlie Christian. We learned about his accomplishments with the Benny Goodman Band and how he developed the guitar as a solo instrument.
You can’t talk about Charlie Christian without talking about jazz! Our teachers played some Benny Goodman Band music for us. We danced a little and smiled a lot!
StringTime Guitar Camp Day 2 ✅
Today we learned about the invention of the electric guitar, enjoyed group class, received private lessons, and studied new rhythms in theory class.
Our featured guitar player of the day was Andrés Segovia. One of our StringTime guitar teachers even played a piece arranged by him for solo guitar!
Guitar Camp Day 1 ✅
The kids got their guitars, learned how to hold and strum them, and studied the history of the instrument— from the oud to the lute to the theorbo to the baroque guitar to the classical guitar.
StringTime Alexandria Session 2, Day 5 ✅
Enjoy a clip from our concert! This performance is of our Rondo Class (those who have taken strings class in school prior to attending camp).
👏 Bravo to all!
StringTime Session 2, Day 4 ✅
Approaching memory from different angles— write a road map, draw pictures, make up hand motions…
At StringTime, we try ALL of the different approaches that we can think of in order to accommodate different learning styles.
What would it look like if kids could hear their violin, viola, and cello teachers play songs they recognize? What if they could get up and move? What if they could make noise? What if they could laugh? Would they be inspired to learn?🤔
This is what StringTime is all about— inspiring kids to LOVE music so they will WANT to learn.
StringTime Session 2, Day 3 ✅
Registration for StringTime Guitar Camp closes on Saturday! No prior experience is required and instruments are provided. Teachers come from top music schools including Berklee!
