We believe every child, no matter their circumstances should have access to books and to the literacy
There are 😎many things that parents and families can do to mitigate summer learning loss and also to spark a love of learning in kids such as formal summer programs, but also daily activities like for example measuring ingredients while cooking, calculating costs of 🤪shopping, or keeping scores of board games or playing sports.
Swipe to discover how to keep kids engaged during reading time! 📚✨
Select stories with vivid illustrations and exciting plots to capture their interest.
Short reading sessions help maintain focus. Aim for 10-15 minutes.
Ask questions about the story to make them think and stay engaged.
Use gestures or actions related to the story to keep it lively and fun.
Vary your tone and character voices with facial gestures to make the story come alive.
Let kids turn pages or point out details in pictures to keep them involved.
At UK Reads, we are dedicated to improving 😎foundational literacy skills through engaging programs designed to foster a love for reading among children.
Write in the comments your best tip, and use these tips to make reading a fun and engaging experience for your child! 📖

Did you know we now support 11-16 year olds, in addition to our early years support!🤓 By partnering with secondary schools, we're dedicated to fostering essential literacy skills for future success in the workforce. We are grateful for the incredibly funding from Mercer's Company which has empowered us💪 to reach more young people in London over the next three years!
1 in 5 children in the UK struggle to💪 read and write. Every child, from babies to young adults, should feel literacy-confident for learning and enjoyment - for too many children like Mia, growing up in the most deprived areas of the UK, this can be that much harder.
Working closely with teachers👨🏫🧑💻 and youth workers, the World Literacy Foundation initiative UK Reads provides much-needed literacy resources.
This is the power of literacy. This is the power of you🥰

We are delighted to tell you about our project 'Literacy Impact East London' 🤓which will focus on Secondary-aged children struggling to meet expected academic reading levels and strive to improve their foundational literacy skills.
Our project kicks off in the Borough of Hackney, known for its rich language diversity boasting 89 different languages,😏 with 47% of its population from non-English speaking backgrounds. It's also estimated up to 60% of children from low-income backgrounds in the Borough don’t own a single book. Our provision will then extend into Newham and Tower Hamlets.
A wonderful team of volunteers and facilitators will bring books, support and resources to engage children 😬and young people. We seek to bridge the gap in key literacy skill and help in the development of work ready young people.
We cant wait to share more about this exciting project with you!😄

Meet Ruby, a resilient 7-year-old from one of London's most deprived communities. After losing her mum, Ruby's education suffered, She unfortunately had literacy skills at a 4-year-old level before UK Reads offered to support. Despite teachers and her dad giving their best, the lack of books, school pace, and reading support became a roadblock in her education. Since receiving support, Ruby has blossomed, exploring the enchanting world of literacy with her dad by her side.
This Christmas, our campaign is dedicated to children just like Ruby. Help us break down barriers by providing access to books, reading support, and educational resources. Join us in rewriting stories, offering the gift of literacy and a path to a brighter future.

As a dyslexic adult reading to your children can seem like a daunting task, missing words, reading it wrong, and having to read the same page two or three times. The parent we spoke to said the worry of getting it wrong had hindered his ability and confidence to read to his children but once he started reading to them daily he found the quality time with his children outweighed his worry. Soon he was relaxing into reading and enjoying the bedtime routine each day exploring lots of different books that his children loved. ‘Reading to my children has not only been a benefit to them it’s also increased my confidence and reading ability and has given us family bonding time each day to snuggle up together and go on an adventure.’ UK Reads Project Parent

The mere presence of books in a child's life — at home and in their communities — profoundly impacts their academic achievement. In fact, children raised in a home with books are 20% more likely to finish college. However, 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children.
Each year, UK Reads distributes thousands of free children’s books to that 61%. 📚 You can be part of this mission. Join us in bringing books to children in the UK.
