Our Story
Vermont Stage, Young Writers Project, The Flynn Center, Weston Playhouse, and a network of professional theatre artists come together every year to produce the largest youth playwriting program in the State; providing a unique opportunity for students to explore writing plays that give voice to their take on the world, resulting in work that is often funny, provocative, and personal.
Vermont Young Playwrights currently serves a loyal group of 18-25 schools in Northern Vermont and 5 in Southern Vermont. Students come from a variety of backgrounds: urban and rural, native Vermonters and recent immigrants. By integrating playwriting into class curriculum, VYP enhances literacy, communication, empathetic connection, and creative expression. Since 1995, over 11,500 middle and high school students have participated in Vermont Young Playwrights, developing 10-minute plays that give voice to their experience.
Through the VYP program a playwright visits a middle or high school classroom for a 2- or 3- day residency, introducing students to the fundamentals of playwriting, and using writing prompts to inspire ideas. On the later visits, students support and critique one another in a moderated feedback process, and refine their plays further.
In April, the best plays from each school are selected by a panel of writers, directors, educators, and actors. These selections are then presented in staged and cold readings performed by professional theater artists at our two-day festival in May, hosted by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Burlington. Up to 600 students participate in this live event annually.
