Cure Your Crop
The vast majority of water in a harvested cannabis plant dries within a week, but they may take another week or so until they are ready to cure. Curing removes most of the remaining water while retaining the terpenes. It’s essential to the taste of finished buds and is analogous to the wine aging process in that it uses a precise climate and time to bring out the plant's best aromas and flavors. Uncured buds still “work” but are not nearly as enjoyable. This process is all about the taste.
The best way to cure cannabis is within a climate-controlled room with a consistent temperature and relative humidity so the buds lose water at a slow stable pace. Set the temperature at 65-70°F and the humidity at 55-60%. Provide continuous circulation using fans on low and place the buds and colas loosely on trays, in boxes, or hung lines. Cure the crop for 10 to 30 days under darkness or dim light.
For home growers who lack a room where they can climate control there are other methods. If your space has less than 45% RH, you can keep your buds from getting too dry by wrapping them individually in newspaper. Then, tape the paper shut, but don’t seal it on the ends so the packages can breathe and place them in a cool dark room. The semi-permeable paper maintains a higher RH than the room it's in.
A brown paper bag keeps humidity higher than the humidity in a room; this slows evaporation. Recirculate humidity by opening or closing the bag. To keep the humidity lower, place only two or three layers of big buds in the bag. Use a hygrometer to measure the moisture level in the bag. If the humidity climbs above 50%, use a fan to remove moisture-laden air.
Despite being popular, jars for curing is not recommended. It’s more work and increases the possibility the crop will be destroyed. The concept of using a closed container for either drying or curing is not recommended. People often “burp” (open) the jars during drying to remove excess humidity.
