Zero Disturbance

Empowering clients & therapists to work smarter, not harder.

08/17/2024

We’ve all seen the messages about getting over trauma, feeling happier, being more productive, and managing our feelings, right?

Here's the deal: First, it's tough to tackle big challenges alone. Second, what works for one person might not work for the next.

If you're in therapy and feel like you're not getting what you want out of it, there are things you can do on your own (or with your therapist) to see better results, faster.

And if you're a therapist, it's totally cool to use resources outside of your training. As long as you educate yourself. (Though I recommend training, especially in brain-based modalities.)

I've put together my favorite free resources for both therapists and clients to make your therapy sessions super empowering.

Grab them here and watch your bundle grow in the next few weeks.

How cool is this, that a therapy client shared the podcast with their therapist!? I love it.

This means so much to me, that I’ve inspired someone to explore more about EMDR so they can start sharing the message! 😍

If you’ve ever been told you have generalized anxiety disorder or you’re an anxious person, you may have sought out talk therapy or even medication to help you with this. Oftentimes therapists and physicians don’t see a connection between anxiety and trauma, likely because the American Psychological Association and the DSM’s definition of trauma is way too narrow.

The reality is that most people have experienced trauma and the feeling of anxiety is incredibly common. Feeling anxiety is normal! And EMDR is an amazing tool for recalibrating your relationship with the feeling of anxiety.

This week on the podcast I’m resharing one of our most popular episodes, where I talk more about what trauma actually is, and why the feeling of anxiety falls under this umbrella. I’m also sharing how EMDR brings everything we know about therapy into one modality and allows us to connect with parts of ourselves that hold anxiety so we can begin to heal.

The popularity really speaks to the importance of this topic!

It is not the survivor's responsibility to forgive anyone who's hurt them. This idea challenges traditional therapy approaches that often push forgiveness as a necessary step in healing.

Trauma-informed therapists recognize that true recovery isn't about pardoning the perpetrator—it's about rebuilding the survivor's sense of safety, self-trust, and empowerment.

Healing is a deeply personal journey. For some, forgiveness may be a part of that journey, but it should never be forced or expected. Instead, our focus should be on helping survivors reclaim their autonomy, process their experiences in a way that feels safe for them, and rediscover their inherent worth.

Shifting away from the pressure to forgive creates space for survivors to honor their emotions—including anger and rage—as valid and protective responses.

This approach allows for a more holistic healing process that respects the complexity of trauma and the individual needs of each survivor.

This is a call for mental health professionals to commit to empowering our clients, validating their experiences, and supporting them in reclaiming their lives on their own terms.

Healing is possible, and it doesn't require forgiveness to be complete.

"Forgive and forget"—a phrase that's caused more harm than healing in therapy rooms.

As an EMDR Consultant, I've witnessed firsthand how this outdated approach can retraumatize clients and hinder their recovery.

True healing isn't about erasing our past or forcing forgiveness. It's about processing our experiences, honoring our emotions, and rebuilding trust in ourselves.

This week on the podcast, we're challenging traditional narratives and exploring empowering alternatives that respect each individual's unique journey.

Whether you're a therapist or a client, this discussion will shed new light on trauma recovery and the path to genuine healing.

Tune in to discover how we can approach therapy with more compassion, understanding, and respect for the complex nature of trauma.

As both practitioners and seekers of healing, it’s easy to follow the well-worn paths laid out by those we admire in the field. Their wisdom and guidance can be invaluable, offering a compass when the journey seems difficult.

However, the true power of change lies in honing our own inner compass. It's the client's personal insights, efforts, and revelations that truly shape the outcome of their therapeutic journey.

Recognizing this as both an EMDR specialist and a therapy client, I've developed The Client Workbook with accompanying videos—a comprehensive resource designed to empower therapy clients in their healing process.

This 70-page workbook, complemented by over 3 hours of video content, serves as a guide for clients to identify and amplify what resonates most deeply with their unique path to healing. It's a tool for self-discovery and active participation in the therapeutic process.

For therapists, we offer a licensing option, allowing you to integrate this powerful resource into your practice and support all your clients in their journey of self-empowerment.

Therapy goals shouldn't be set in stone. As an EMDR therapist, I've witnessed how rapid healing can lead to unexpected personal growth and entirely new possibilities.

Traditional metrics often miss the subtle yet profound changes happening beneath the surface. That's why I'm excited to share a different approach: measuring "process outcomes."

Setting therapy goals based on process outcomes can capture how easily and efficiently you can implement positive changes, offering a more nuanced view of therapy progress.

Listen in this week to hear how this perspective could change your therapeutic journey and create potential you never knew you had.

As helping professionals and those seeking help, we often inherit a roadmap from respected mentors. We look to them for ideas and support and lean on their words to help us move forward.

But in reality, the most powerful tool in our arsenal is our own discernment!

It’s ultimately the therapy clients’ own takeaways and work that determines the outcomes of the treatment.

That’s why I created The Client Workbook + supporting videos, a tool to help therapy clients feel more empowered in their treatment.

The workbook, a 70-page resource with over 3 hours of supporting videos is designed to support clients in identifying what is helpful and effective in the healing process.

And, if you’re a therapist, you can access a license so you can use this tool with all your therapy clients.

Safety in therapy goes far beyond just feeling comfortable. Being safe is about creating an environment where true healing and transformation can occur.

This week on the podcast, we’re looking into how our understanding of safety in EMDR and other therapeutic approaches like psychedelics is (and should be!) constantly evolving.

We’re talking about common assumptions and exploring new possibilities that could truly change both the therapist and client experience. From rethinking traditional methods to examining emerging treatments like psychedelic-assisted therapy, we're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in healing.

Whether you're a therapist looking to expand your toolkit or a client seeking to be more empowered in your therapeutic journey, this conversation will open your eyes to new perspectives on safety and efficacy in mental health treatment.

Saying EMDR is only for certain people or that there's only one way to do it is like avoiding Baskin Robbins because you don't like one flavor.

EMDR offers a variety of approaches, much like those 32 ice cream flavors!

While the standard EMDR protocol was developed over 40 years ago, the field has evolved significantly. Today, EMDR encompasses numerous variations and adaptations.

When considering EMDR versus talk therapy, it's crucial to understand the full spectrum of choices available. Don't limit yourself to one flavor when there's a whole menu of healing options to explore!

EMDR therapy isn’t just for severe trauma, as many believe. Rather, it can address everything from minor anxieties to complex PTSD.

And contrary to popular belief, you don't always have to dive into your most distressing memories right away.

EMDR offers gentler techniques to build resources and confidence before tackling bigger issues. From standard protocol to innovative methods like EMDR 2.0, Flash, and Four Blinks, there's an EMDR-informed approach for every need and comfort level. If you have an effective therapist, they have educated themselves so they can offer a menu of options to their clients.

This week on the podcast, we’re breaking down these options, empowering both therapists and clients to make informed choices about their healing journey.

Listen in to learn how EMDR might accelerate your progress and create lasting positive change.

Changing behavior isn't just about willpower or positive thinking. Traditional approaches often fall short in the therapy room because they overlook the complex neurological programming behind our actions.

This week on the podcast, we explore how brain-based therapies like EMDR can transform addictive patterns and create lasting change. And why shame-based “solutions” do a disservice to those in addiction or with compulsive behaviors.

Learn why focusing solely on beliefs and behaviors may be hindering progress, and discover a more comprehensive approach to personal transformation.

Whether you're a therapist wanting to better support your clients or someone seeking change, this episode offers valuable insights that go beyond conventional wisdom. Which is exactly the conversation we need to have, now that we know better.

Attachment isn't just about childhood—it's actively shaping your relationships right now. And in therapy, there’s always an element of attachment work in play.

Early experiences have created beliefs and behaviors that influence every interaction. But when past trauma exists or present adaptations aren’t helpful, know that everyone has the power to rewrite that code.

This week on the podcast, we’re taking a look at the hidden dynamics driving connections, from "show and tell" behaviors to dramatic outbursts.

Listen in to learn how to develop a secure internal "mirror" and choose who gets to reflect your worth. Doing this work can help to transform relationships from the inside out and create the authentic connections that we all crave.

Are you wondering if you're truly getting what you need from therapy?

I've been pondering this for years, both as a client and as an EMDR consultant and Brainspotting practitioner. That's why I've created the Client Workbook - a game-changing tool for anyone in therapy, either as a client or a clinician.

This workbook isn't just another self-help guide. It's the culmination of insights from hundreds of EMDR therapists, my experience at Stanford Medical School, over 10,000 patient sessions, and my own therapy journey.

Whether you're in CBT, psychodynamic therapy, or life coaching, this workbook will supercharge your self-understanding and help your therapist create a tailored, trauma-informed treatment plan.

Let's face it - therapy can be expensive and time-consuming. This workbook helps you bypass the waiting lists and dive deep into self-discovery. It's your chance to clearly communicate who you are and what you need, empowering you to co-create your treatment plan.

Ready to transform your therapy experience? Check out the Client Workbook and take control of your healing journey.

Therapy isn't just about fixing what's broken - it's about unlocking your full potential or the full potential of your client.

And looking at therapy as a way to “fix” a specific challenge or issue is a disservice to therapy as a whole.

Approaches like EMDR and Brainspotting work with both challenges and strengths, creating a more holistic path to healing and growth.

These techniques recognize that our brains run multiple "programs" simultaneously, some positive and some negative.

By addressing both, we can not only resolve past traumas, but also enhance performance and create positive future templates.

Whether you're a therapist looking to expand your toolkit or someone seeking to maximize your therapeutic journey, this week’s podcast episode offers valuable insights into the interconnected nature of trauma work and personal growth.

Listen now to reshape your understanding of the therapeutic process and learn how you can tap into your brain's remarkable capacity for change.

It’s time we challenge (and change!) the status quo in therapy. Both as therapists and as therapy clients.

This starts with understanding why some of the most common mental health diagnoses may be doing more harm than good.

Yes, I’m saying it!

The diagnoses that therapists dish out and the ones we self-identify with are doing so much more harm than good and keeping us stuck in negative cycles.

Breaking free from limiting labels and reprogramming your mind is possible, and I'm sharing how in this podcast episode.

Therapists and therapy clients alike will gain practical tools to enhance their journey and create lasting change.

Listen in now and be part of the change.

You don’t have to rehash all your old trauma to heal from it. EMDR can get to the bottom of the adaptations you learned as a result of that trauma so you can desensitize from it and create new pathways in your brain.

If you’re like most people, you’re thinking about new year’s resolutions. And if you’re like most people, you haven’t been successful with resolutions in the past…and you likely won’t be this year either.

Hear me out.

We can’t simply say we’re going to let go of bad habits. We can’t cut out behaviors like drinking alcohol, picking our nails, smoking, binging junk food, or even over-exercising. These behaviors are adaptations that we learned as a way to process trauma and/or sooth ourselves.

In order to truly be successful with your resolutions or goals in the new year, you need to first desensitize the trauma, then replace those habits with something else with more benefits.

That’s where EMDR comes in!

This week on the podcast, I’m walking through the phases of EMDR and what that looks like in rewiring our brains for a fresh start in the new year.

Ever wonder why acceptance in the grief cycle can feel so distant? It's because reaching acceptance means our brain and body have found a new plan, a new map to guide us.

But what happens when that map isn't formed yet? When we're still reeling from a life change, whether it's understanding a child's sudden shift, a marriage dissolving, or losing a job we thought was secure? These moments can feel jarring. Our neural networks scramble for connections they can no longer find, and our sense of safety is shaken.

We often rush to try to create a new map because living without one is uncomfortable. It's like walking in the dark in a room you thought you knew. The pressure to quickly adapt and “move on” can be huge, especially since society has wired us to think that’s what we need to do.

But remember: grief is a process, and it takes time for our minds and bodies to adjust and find a new sense of normal.

If you're feeling stuck in your grief, know that it's okay. It's a sign that your mind and body are still working on that new map. Be patient with yourself. Healing and understanding will come in time, and you will find your way again.

Be sure to tune into the whole episode about finding your way through grief with the help of EMDR.

And if you want more support, get access to a growing library of free resources and feel more empowered in your own therapy journey. zerodisturbance.com/free-resources

Ever felt like your world has changed overnight? That's grief, and it's not always about losing someone.

Grief is often misunderstood. It's not just about death; it's about change - the end of a relationship, a move, job loss, or even a shift in how we see ourselves. These life changes can trigger a grief response, similar to losing a loved one, but often without the same acknowledgment or support.

This week, I'm opening up about some of my own personal experiences with grief and how EMDR helped me through. We'll explore how EMDR not only aids in processing traditional grief, but also helps us navigate the complex emotions of life's ever-present transitions.

It's time to understand and normalize the grief that comes with change. Listen to this week's episode and know that what you're going through is normal and learn how EMDR can support you in these challenging times.

Tune in, share with someone who might need this message, and remember: it's okay to feel disoriented; it's a part of the journey towards healing.

It’s time we stop telling our daughters that expressing anger isn’t ladylike or proper and start to undo the damage we’ve done. Anger is a natural biological response to something and it’s designed to keep us safe.

Trying to repress anger is defining anger as “bad” and something we shouldn’t feel. And in doing so, we’re doing a disservice to everyone who feels anger as a trauma response. Not to mention disempowering anyone for whom anger protects them from things like violence, SA, and other harm.

This week on the podcast, I’m starting the conversation about rebranding anger into something that has served humans for hundreds of thousands of years.

Listen in and join the conversation. Let’s stop “working on anger” and start getting more curious about where our anger and our feelings toward it came from.

It's fascinating and frankly quite troubling how society shapes our relationship with food and our bodies. Growing up as a girl, then as a woman, I was bombarded with messages about what my body 'should' look like and how it would be perceived.

This societal curriculum is powerful, dictating what's supposedly 'right' or 'wrong' for and with our bodies.

Family dynamics play a big role too. How our parents, especially those we identify with gender-wise, approach eating and body image can deeply influence us. As a daughter, I remember observing my mother's dieting patterns and her dissatisfaction with her body.

The irony? Twice in my life, during periods of intense grief where I lost significant weight, I received the most compliments on my appearance I’ve had before or since. At my lowest emotional points, struggling with loss and unable to eat, society applauded how I looked. 💔

This experience highlights a warped reality: sometimes our most challenging moments are when we're praised for fitting into a societal mold of physical 'perfection.' It's a stark reminder of why we need to challenge these norms and focus on genuine health and well-being, rather than just appearances.

Today, I'm taking a moment to pause and deeply express my gratitude to each and every one of you who is a part of this journey. Your support means the world to me, and I cannot thank you enough.

My mission, the core of everything I do, is to ensure that everyone, regardless of where they are in the world, has access to essential mental health resources. I am acutely aware that, in many places, these resources are still a distant dream for so many people. This gap in mental health care is something that weighs heavily on my heart. 💔

Each day, I am motivated by the belief that mental health care is a fundamental right, not a privilege. It's a necessity that should be available to all, crossing all borders, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses.

Together we can make a significant impact, spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and opening pathways for healing and support in communities far and wide.

Here’s to a future where mental health support is not a luxury, but a given for everyone, everywhere. Thank you for being a part of this vital journey.
