We recently put out a survey asking others in our community how long they have struggled with Lyme or another tick-borne disease.

By far, the majority of patients have been coping with symptoms for longer than two years, with some sharing that they have been sick for decades. Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses are debilitating and need to be taken seriously by the public and especially the medical community.

We thank everyone who participated in the survey and shared their experiences in the comments 💚

I was emotionally destroyed but I kept fighting, and begging for someone to actually help her. Until finally a doctor outside the hospital system took us seriously. Started treating her with antibiotics and antifungals. Pippa got immediately better...

New research explored the relationship between pain and biomarkers in 186 patients with chronic Lyme disease or tick-borne illness before and after antibiotic treatment. Pain levels significantly decreased after treatment (with median pain scores dropping from 7 to 5), but changes in biomarkers like transferrin, CD4%, and platelets did not directly predict these pain reductions. Age and gender were not found to influence pain levels.

The study suggests the possibility of ongoing infection in some patients with chronic Lyme disease and highlights the need for appropriate antibiotic treatment to relieve their pain, while also acknowledging ongoing debates about the best approach to managing this condition.

Ticks are spreading into new areas of New York City and bringing dangerous diseases along with them. The NYC Ticks research project, led by Columbia University researchers, which launched in 2017, has found disease-carrying ticks in 70% of the parks they have surveyed across New York City so far this year. Lyme disease is a high risk, but it’s not the only one to be wary of. The researchers identified four species of ticks — blacklegged ticks, Asian longhorned ticks, Lone Star ticks, and American Dog ticks — each carrying different infections.

Ticks are tiny! They have four life stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. In each stage after hatching, they suck blood from animals like mice, squirrels, birds and deer. Then they drop off, enter a dormant period and molt before entering the next stage. At every stage many types of ticks can transmit bacteria, viruses or other pathogens that cause disease in humans and/or animals.
