Breast Implant Illness (BII) is an illness of exclusion. It is typically found to be a compilation of (often unexplained) symptoms. Because implants can affect most body systems, symptoms are widespread and can be related to chemical toxicity, biotoxicity, immune dysfunction, auto-immune symptoms, neurological symptoms, endocrine symptoms and metabolic symptoms.

After my breast augmentation 6.5 years ago, I began to develop a multitude of symptoms, none of which I ever thought to be associated with my implants. My symptoms did not develop all at once, nor were they linear. However, in the last 1-2 years my symptoms began to increase in number and severity. I talked to doctors, had blood tests done, only to be told that I was in exceptional health. Of course that was better news than I was anticipating to get, but then why the hell did I feel like a 90 year old?
Being stubborn and strong willed by nature, I continued to just push through what began to be debilitating symptoms, to the point where just doing simple everyday tasks like laundry or taking my dog out absolutely drained the life out of me. I had become a shell of a person.

BII had been in my ear for the last couple of years, but ego and lack of education on the topic led me to dismiss the legitimacy of it. That is, until I ruled out all other possible causes of the issues I was struggling with and began diving into information on BII as well as the shared experiences of thousands of women who have struggled in very similar ways. After that, I quickly came to the conclusion that there was one option left to try in hopes of finding relief; explanting.

This past Tuesday, November 21st, I had an explant with a total capsulectomy (removing the capsule the body forms around the implant). Within just hours after surgery, I began noticing symptoms disappearing. I am 4 days post-op today and I feel better than I have in years. I am almost in disbelief that healing from such chronic issues could happen this quickly, but I am grateful beyond measure.

I want to conclude this by saying that I am by no means anti-plastic surgery, but I am certainly pro-information. If you or someone you know has implants and has dealt with unexplained issues, educate yourself on BII. There are some incredible resources out there that have been of great help and support to me. Of course I am also more than happy to answer any questions and share anything I can to help.

I am incredibly grateful for the support and encouragement I've received from my family and close friends that I shared this with prior to surgery. When I brought up BII and explanting to certain "friends" and exes in the past, I've been called crazy, had symptoms belittled or dismissed, and the most challenging, been questioned on "what if they look look bad?" or "what if you don't like your body after taking them out?".
To all of that I say, who the hell has any say about my own opinion of my own body? In fact, I feel more confident now than I have in a very long time. This is about health and quality of life, and that should always, ALWAYS come first.
