A team approach is a crucial aspect of sports medicine. It is common to have doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, and other professionals from different disciplines working together. One of the main benefits is that it allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the athlete. Each team member brings a unique skill set and has a specific role in the overall health and well-being to ensure that athletes are healthy and prepared to compete at their best. Meet Luke Windom, a physical therapy patient at our Carrollton clinic. Luke is a junior at Bowdon High School, a running back for the Bowdon Red Devils football team, and an outfielder for their baseball team. In September 2022, Luke tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on the football field and underwent ACL reconstruction surgery. Nearly one year later, it tore again on the baseball field. Luke is now six months post-op and works with Lew Blackman, PT, ATC, CLT on strengthening, balance, agility, coordination, conditioning, and other sport-specific exercises. Luke also travels to Champion Sports Medicine in Birmingham, AL, and works with Kevin E. Wilk, PT, DPT, FAPTA. Lew had the opportunity to work with Kevin during a clinical rotation while in physical therapy school. Kevin has treated athletes such as Michael Jordan, John Smoltz, and Eli Manning, to name just a few. Luke’s comprehensive rehab program continues outside our outpatient clinic at Bowdon High School, where he works with Kyle Huff ATC/LAT, PE, AHAI. Southern Therapy Services I FYZICAL provides athletic trainers (ATs) at several local high schools as part of our community involvement. ATs provide comprehensive care, as well as treatment so that athletes recover and return to practice or play safely after a sports-related injury or illness. Kyle began working with Luke leading up to his procedure, preparing his knee and body for surgery. This can minimize the effect of the injury and prepare for s

Strengthening and aggressive stretching are vital components of treating shoulder injuries. 💪

It’s the fall season, which means the return of football, pumpkin-flavored everything, and time to shine a spotlight on the importance of fall prevention. Taking proactive measures to prevent falls is crucial, as it allows individuals to maintain independence and continue to do the activities they love. Meet Margaret Mote, a stroke survivor and physical therapy patient, at our Carrollton clinic. Margaret works with Chris Brimeyer, PT, DPT, twice a week on strengthening, balance, and coordination. Balance retraining is often needed following a stroke due to weakness or paralysis affecting one side of the body (also known as Hemiparesis, a common after-effect). Chris, who has advanced education and training in balance and vestibular rehabilitation, uses our Safety Overhead System (SOS) with Margaret during her physical therapy sessions. The system consists of an overhead track, safety harness, and moveable trolley, allowing her to perform a series of exercises while observing her balance and gait patterns with minimal risk of injury. Margaret’s recovery has included physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility, followed by therapy in her home and later transitioning to our outpatient clinic. She can now walk with a walker to a cane assist, walk unassisted, swallow food, get dressed, tie her shoes, cook, and play cards! When asked what her favorite part of therapy is, she says, “Getting stronger, meeting people, and Chris is so understanding.”

📣 September is National Fall Prevention Awareness Month! Balance is something that we constantly strive for in our lives , and it can quickly erode with age, injury, and weakness. It plays a significant role in our activities of daily living, recreational participation, and overall health and wellness. Luckily, with a little focus and direction, you can regain balance at any stage of your life. Balance is more than just standing on one leg 🦩. It is the ability to perceive our environment, adjust quickly to that environment, and plan for future movements. It involves three separate systems within our body: Visual 👁, Vestibular 👂, and Proprioception 🦶. We use the balance in static (staying in one place) and dynamic (on the move) movement patterns. If we can maintain a good balance on our feet, ultimately, we will reduce the risk of falling and further injuries. Balance retraining tends to be a key focus in most physical therapy sessions with patients in all stages of injury rehabilitation and age groups. The more balanced an individual is, the stronger an individual’s movements become. If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one falling, contact our clinics and start living the life you love again! #fightthefall #balancetraining #vestibulartherapy #fallrisk #fallpreventionmonth #physicaltherapy

You know you’re in an exceptional therapy environment when our employees receive care here! Meet Kim Pope, Accounts Payable & Payroll Manager for Southern Therapy Services I FYZICAL. After a fall, Kim injured her right shoulder and underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and bicep tenodesis. She most recently had a follow-up procedure on the same shoulder to remove scar tissue after experiencing increased pain during her recovery period, leading to adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder). Kim received occupational therapy from Evan Brooks, OTR/L. He works with Kim on strengthening, aggressive stretching, range of motion, and return to function. Following treatment, Kim can now complete activities of daily living such as getting dressed, bathing, and driving, and her pain level has much improved! She has since met her treatment goals and graduated from her outpatient therapy program and into a home exercise program to avoid losing mobility. 💪 FUN FACT: Our OT program’s caseload is over 50% post-surgical orthopedics and largely shoulder patients. They also see complex hand, wrist, and elbow injuries and adult neurological patients (stroke survivors, etc.) When asked her favorite part of therapy, Kim responds, “ The great staff! Being able to do things I could not before and becoming more independent.” #occupationaltherapy #orthopedics #rotatorcuff #carrolltonga #villaricaga #bremenga

“What brings you to Southern Therapy I FYZICAL?” is a common question our patients get asked. For Dr. Mary-Kathryn Zachary, the answers span approximately 20 years. “Southern Therapy has helped me in every stage of my adult life. I’ve been treated head-to-toe, neck, shoulder, knee, ankle, foot, balance, fitness, and wound management,” she recalls. Zachary, a retired University of West Georgia professor, planned a bucket-list retirement trip to Alaska. Following several setbacks, including the covid pandemic and a hospital stay last year due to an infection, she came to our Carrollton clinic with one major goal in mind, her Alaskan cruise. Lew Blackman, PT, ATC, CLT, has often worked with Zachary. After being discharged from the hospital in 2022, she was extremely weak. During her physical therapy sessions, Lew worked with her on strengthening, flexibility, balance, and endurance twice a week for several months. This summer, Zachary achieved her goal and went to Alaska. She could walk during excursions, go up and down stairs, maintain balance on the ship, see wildlife, and hold part of a glacier! When asked her favorite part about therapy, she responds, “Ya’ll enabled me to take that bucket list trip. Lew is a genius and the perfect physical therapist.” Zachary has also lost over 50 pounds by regaining the ability to be more active. “What all of you do here affects everything. You know exactly what to do for any problem or goal in a comfortable, accepting, and caring environment,” she says. #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #carrolltonga #villaricaga #bremenga

Back pain is a common condition affecting people of any age and can have various causes. It may be related to an injury, strained muscles, poor posture, or an underlying condition such as arthritis or herniated disc. It is a common complaint among young athletes, especially those who participate in sports that involve a lot of bending, twisting, or impact on the spine. Meet Cheyann Smith, a pitcher and basketball player. She was diagnosed with lumbar spondylolisthesis, a condition that affects the lower back, which occurs when one of the bones in your spine, called a vertebra, slips forward and out of place onto the bone below it. This can cause pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, and nerve compression. Cheyann received physical therapy at our Carrollton clinic with Keyana Dunbar, PT, DPT, ATC, to strengthen the muscles that support her spine with various exercises to improve flexibility, strength, core stability, and range of motion (how easily your joints move). Physical therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain, as it can help reduce and manage pain, restore mobility, and improve the quality of life. 🔗For more information visit: www.southerntherapyservices.com #physicaltherapy #orthopedics #sportsmedicine #carrolltonga

You might hear the term “occupational therapy” and assume it has something to do with helping people with physical issues that affect their ability to work. But it’s much broader than that. Think of “occupation” as anything that occupies your time that you find purposeful, like your ability to dress or make meals. For a stroke survivor, occupational therapy and exercise play key roles in returning to a life as close as possible to what it was before the stroke. A stroke can create a wide range of complications, depending on its location in the brain. Among the most noticeable effects is one-sided weakness (hemiparesis). A stroke on the left side of the brain can result in weakness on the right side of the body and vice versa. Meet John Barnes, an occupational therapy patient at our Carrollton clinic and stroke survivor. When John began OT with us in March, he had little to no movement in his hand and arm on his left side. He could not even bend his fingers. John works with Evan Brooks, OTR/L, on strengthening, resistance training, and range of motion exercises to restore John’s hand, shoulder, and elbow to as much function as possible. Evan works on loosening John’s shoulder using a pulley system, utilizes Fluidotherapy, a heating modality used to loosen tissue and joints in John’s hand, manual therapy, and a BTE machine that replicates specific tasks of daily living such as lifting, opening a jar, and putting things away in a refrigerator. Evan even constructed a wrist splint for John, allowing his fingers to bend more. John can now grasp to pick anything up. He can open drinks (that before he could not hold). John can eat, feed, and bathe. When asked his favorite part about therapy, he responds, “ Doing everything I am doing. I can tell the difference.” #occupationaltherapy #otmonth #ot

April is National #OTMonth and the perfect time to highlight how effective occupational therapy is in helping people return to doing the activities they love that matter the most in their daily lives! We are proud to employ some of the best in the field that works in various settings throughout our company. Angela Kelley is an occupational therapy patient with Alison Drummond, OTR/L, CHT, at our Carrollton clinic. Angela is a postal worker who sustained a traumatic forearm injury following multiple dog bites. She underwent surgery to place pieces of broken bones back together using metal plates and other hardware. When Angela arrived at our clinic, she had a significantly reduced range of motion in her hand, arm, and shoulder, discomfort, and edema (swelling). She could not even make a fist or straighten or turn her arm. Alison has been a practicing OT for nearly 25 years with us and earned her Certified Hand Therapist certification in 2019; she has been working with Angela on her swelling utilizing manual edema mobilization, restoring mobility, strengthening, and relieving pain. Angela can now put her hair in a ponytail, tie her shoes, prepare meals, sweep, and drive! Her pain is also better. When asked her favorite part about therapy, she replies, “Alison. She is the greatest.” #otmonth #occupationaltherapy #ot

AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill
We are always looking for new equipment to enhance our services. Meet Allen Vetra, a post-op left knee replacement (TKR) physical therapy patient at our Carrollton clinic. Allen also came to us experiencing pain in his other knee and is working with Lew Blackman, PT, ATC, CLT. He has made great strides in his therapy sessions using our new AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. “It is hard to keep active with knee issues. I have not been able to jog or run for about seven years”, explains Allen, who was very active before his knee problems. Our AlterG delivers physical rehabilitation and training benefits by combining NASA Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology. The precise unweighting chamber allows Allen, and other rehab patients, to reduce their body weight by up to 80% while they walk or run. This allows physical therapy patients and athletes to move and exercise with less weight on their lower extremities, which can shorten the rehab process and build strength in a safe weight-bearing way. During therapy, Lew places Allen on the AlterG for about 30 minutes at 50% of his body weight. “I feel like I’m walking on air,” says Allen. There is a multitude of benefits when rehabbing on the AlterG. Common conditions can include: • Post-surgical patients progressing in their weight-bearing status, such as post-op Total Knee or Hip Replacement, ACL Reconstruction, Meniscus Repairs, Achilles Reconstruction, etc. • Low back pain patients with load (weight) intolerance. • De-conditioned bariatric patients. • Patients with any lower extremity over-use injuries, including Plantar Fasciitis, Tendonitis, Stress Fractures, Ankle Sprains, Patella injuries, etc. • Patients impaired by Degenerative Joint Disease. • Provides a Fall-Safe environment for Neurologic Retraining (Parkinson’s, Stroke, MS, TBI, or Falls Risk patients). • Athletes who want to increase mileage/speed without injury. Allen has noticed that his left knee feels much stronger and has le

Have you heard about the treadmill that can make you weightless? Yup, an anti-gravity treadmill, and you don’t even have to go to outer space! Meet the AlterG. This equipment adds a new dimension to the treatment provided for our patients and athletes in the West Georgia area. The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill offers patients and athletes an option unlike any other. The machine uses NASA DAP technology to defy gravity, allowing you to reduce your body weight (up to 80%) during exercise. AlterG has helped people shorten orthopedic recovery times, manage neurological conditions and chronic disease, build strength and endurance while aging, and increase athletic performance. These treadmills are used at the top rehabilitation institutions in the country, major college or professional sports teams, and Olympic training centers. Our treadmills are open to patients and the general public at our 812 South Park Street clinic and benefit anyone looking to decrease their weight distribution through the lower extremities during exercise. Common conditions include: ✅Post-surgical patients progressing in their weight-bearing status, such as post-op Total Knee or Hip Replacement, ACL Reconstruction, Meniscus Repairs, Achilles Reconstruction, etc. ✅Athletes who want to increase mileage & speed without injury. ✅Low back pain patients with load (weight) intolerance. ✅Deconditioned bariatric patients. ✅Patients with lower extremity over-use injuries, including Plantar Fasciitis, Tendonitis, Stress Fractures, Ankle Sprain, Hip Flexor Strain, Patella injury, etc. ✅Patients impaired by Degenerative Joint Disease. ✅Runners might consider an Alter-G run to log a few miles without the impact before a marathon, or conversely as a tool for recovery after a long race. ✅Provides a fall-safe environment for neurologic retraining during gait training and conditioning (Parkinson's, Stroke, MS, TBI, or Fall Risk patients). 🔗www.southerntherapyservices.com/services/alterg-

The ACL is a ligament in the knee that provides stability. If injured, the knee can be susceptible to giving way, especially during sports. This injury often requires surgery and prolonged periods of rehabilitation. As many as 200,000 people in the United States annually strain or tear an ACL. It is almost always non contact, resulting from sudden deceleration, jump landings, or changing direction. Several sports, including basketball and rugby, can pose a high risk of ACL injury. Meet Jessica Miller, a Central High School sophomore that plays basketball and runs cross country and track. During a basketball game, she suffered a knee injury and underwent ACL reconstruction surgery and a lateral meniscus repair. She is currently receiving physical therapy at our Carrollton clinic. Unlike adults, teen and young adult athletes are still growing. They require clinicians who are both experts in pediatrics – particularly growing bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage – as well as sports medicine. Keyana Dunbar, PT, DPT, ATC, is the director of our outpatient pediatric physical therapy department and an athletic trainer. She has been working with Jessica since late January. Keyana focuses on stretching, strengthening her joints, muscles, tendons, knee, hip, and core muscles, and balance and stability exercises. Keyana will focus on more sport-specific exercises in the coming weeks with Jessica, ensuring good control and knee alignment. Jessica notes that she can bend her knee, her pain is better, and she can push herself more. When asked her favorite part about coming to therapy, she responds, “ Improving, seeing everyone around me getting better, and Keyana.” #NATM2023 #TheresAnATForThat #aclrehab #orthopedics #physicaltherapy
