We've been living here for almost 6 years and finally picked some berries from DJ's Berry Patch 5 mins from our house! The flavor of these beautiful fruits is phenomenal. 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓
(Unfortunately our own berries in our backyard weren't so flavorful this year)

In a sea of sage (Salvia lyrata, lyreleaf sage, native to the southeast US) along TW Alexander Dr in RTP. P drives by this every morning so we had to make a pit stop to see it up close. We so appreciate that whoever manages this land has allowed these native flowers to proliferate, rather than just grass lawn.

If you ever need someone to remove a non-native species or a non-native invasive species, call Native Plants Matter NC. They do a fantastic job by replacing what they removed with native plants that can aid in the formation of a small functional ecosystem on your residential landscape for our native fauna.

An ecosystem can be as small as a dead tree stump and as large as large as a fresh water pond and beyond. There really is no definite size when it comes to an ecosystem in general terms. These ecosystems connect to form what we call a biome. Without getting into the nitty gritty about it, we encourage anyone that sees this post to create a small ecosystem in your backyard by using native plants that have a special connection with our native fauna.

Hey yall an update on our status,

Hope you've all enjoyed the winter solstice! It's always an exciting day for us as we know moving forward, the sun, one of the givers of life, will shine more on us moving forward!

This coming year of 2023, we plan on growing native plants for our nursery, but majority of our plants will be made available through Rachel’s Native Plants . We have the honor to be growing a selection of plants for her new nursery opening up at "The Plant" in Pittsboro, NC in Spring 2023 (https://www.facebook.com/ThePlantInPittsboro).

We are happy for this opportunity to support a new local business and have made a good friend along the way too! Her plant nursery will be focused on native plants and the location of her nursery is such a great place to visit and hangout! So y'all go on out there and support her this spring 2023. She is passionate about what she is doing and we are excited to see all that she accomplishes!

Thank you to Will Ammons for being the mastermind, the inspiration, and the person to put this all together! Thank you to Sorrell's Lawn Care And Nursery for the native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials! Thank you to Hoffman Nursery for the beautiful graminoids! Thank you to all of Cary Citizens and Town of Cary, NC staff that helped to install all the plants into the ground!

Approximately 40+ native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials in the ground at Heater Park.

Approximately 514 native graminoid species into the ground at Heater Park.

This was such a fun event for us to help with from design aspects to installation. Paige and I both are excited to see how this area and future areas of Heater Park will evolve over time!

Photos from P & T's Native Plants's post 10/25/2022

Here is design we installed, with help from Michael Clark, up in the mountains for Paige's father this past weekend. This was quite a fun project for us that incorporated about 239 plant plugs consisting of 9 different native plant species. We will post pictures next year when it is in full-growth mode!

This garden is about 4 years old and was dedicated to Paige's mother who passed away 4 and half years ago to Alzheimer's Disease. We decided to re-do the inner circle. The outside of the garden still consists of our newbie landscape designs when we first started, and the inner ciricle is a reflection of how much we have learned over the years with design concepts. The shrub in the middle is a Miss Molly that was planted for Paige's mother, but we have and still plan to slowly encourage him to replace it with a native shrub species. It is often easier to encourage and educate people than to cast shame on them about a non-native potentially invasive plant species.

One thing Paige and I both have learned is to listen, read, and DO. Ultimately, you can never learn if you don't fail, and the outside border garden is a reflection of our misunderstanding of native species when we first started. But if we don't fail and never reflect inward, then we do not learn.

Single Program 10/25/2022

Hi all,

We'd like to welcome anyone to this event held by the Town of Cary (see link below). A friend of ours will be leading this small workshop this Saturday (10/29) 9am-12pm. It is limited to 10 people and the event is free. The link is below if you'd like to sign-up to attend. Please be prepared to get your hands dirty, and the event link should have all the information about what is required of you to bring.

If you click on the link, there is a description of the work shop. There will be talks about why native plants are important in the landscape and the benefits they provide. After these initial talks, we will break into small groups and plant native groundcover, shrubs, and trees at Heater Park near downtown. Instructions on how to plant certain species will be provided for you.

Single Program myCary is a registration system. We understand as you navigate and try to register, you may encounter issues or have questions. If your needs are not answered below, please email us at [email protected] or call (919) 469-4061. We’re happy to help.

We had the pleasure of doing an install for our neighbors this past weekend. They are great people and have started to add native plants in their backyard, and it doesn't hurt to have neighbors who grows native plants too 😅. In this install we incorporated a lot of fun native short bunching grasses and some nice clumps and drifts of native forbs. We will post some more pictures of its progress next year. The site is a lot bigger than it appears in the picture, and it was our first blank slate install. We are usually installing plants in existing gardens so this was REALLY fun for us. We hope in the future, we are able to provide native garden designs and installs. Only time will tell 🤔

We would like to announce that P&T's Native Plants has become more officially "P&T's"!

Paige and I are excited to say that we both got married to each other this past Sunday!!!

We were lucky to have found a wonderful officiant, and a beautiful native grassland filled with native wildflowers that we were blessed to be allowed to do our small ceremony on. The owner of the land was truly generous to us and we couldn't have asked for anything else.

Paige and I would also like to thank all of the new and previous customers that we got to meet and talk to during the weekend of the plant sale! We very much appreciate your support for our small business. Thank you all for working with us each year as we navigate our day jobs while trying to balance a small backyard native nursery. We hope to be more available for plant sales next year. If you can believe it or not, we will be going into our 4th year as a small backyard nursery, and we are hoping to make our plants more available next year!

Cheers to the cooler temperatures, and we can't wait to see you all next season!

We went out to see the recreation of a Piedmont Prairie yesterday at Duke Gardens in the Blomquist section. For us, this is where our journey with native plants began and eventually led to our small native nursery business. So this garden holds a special place in our hearts.

https://gardens.duke.edu/blomquist/piedmont-prairie

As we were going around looking at all the different species, I made an imagined meter X meter square in a random area and started to count the different species. There were at least 12-13 different native plant species in that area that I could see. It is a beautiful example of how diverse a grassland can be even though it was human-made. Also, it is why we believe that "prairie" type species are the way to go for installing native plants in newly developed areas or if your yard has the clay and full-sun conditions. A lot these species can deal with non-productive soil (construction soil) and with the intense heat we are experiencing now.

If you're thinking about doing a native plant installation, research Piedmont Prairie species. They'll probably do the best for your site if you have those stressful conditions. Remember, pick the right plant for your site conditions. If you pick the plants based on anything other than site conditions, you may have to keep amending your soil over and over again just to keep those plants alive...

Gotta love what they do! If you ever need invasive removal reach out to them! They are great at what they do!

We were honored to have the Great Blue Lobelia in our front garden visited by an American Bumblebee (Bombus pensylvanicus) the other day. She was really sticking her head in there for that sweet nectar! Besides their distinct color banding, another ID clue is their very long face (malar space). This is the first time we've seen this species in our yard. Once widespread, it is now threatened due to habitat loss and pesticide usage.

-We hope to be back in the swing of things next year with some adjustments in how you can purchase and pick-up your plants. We very much would like to continue our little side business and are figuring out ways to fit this passion of ours into our everyday jobs while having a healthy work-life balance. Thank you to all who have decided to put native plants into your landscape. Our native flora and fauna appreciate your efforts, and we hope the "Green" will smile upon your parcel of land. 🌱

Y'all have a great spring, we hope to see you around 🌿

Important announcement!

Hi everybody. We are making some changes to our small business this year. After much discussion, the two of us have decided to scale back on our business plans. We will not be selling at farmers’ markets or doing deliveries/pick-ups this year. Our online store will be closed, but we may restructure our website to continue providing useful information and updates. **We will still be participating in at least ONE plant show this spring, however; more details to follow.** We may possibly participate in future events this year if our time constraints permit.

We’ve made this tough decision to allow for better balance between our full-time work, our plant nursery, and our personal lives. Time is the most precious resource, and now we will have more time on our hands while remaining optimal at our day jobs in healthcare.

Thank you all for your kind and generous support in 2020 and 2021! We are ecstatic that folks have been interested in gardening with native plants and truly grateful that you were willing to add our plants to your landscapes. If you were planning to source plants from us this year, you’ll still have your chance at event(s) we will attend in spring. More information coming soon.

Growing plants and providing food and shelter for the critters of the land continues to bring us great joy. We still plan to be involved in our local communities, so we hope to see you around. Happy gardening to all!

Sincerely,

Paige & Taylor (P&T)

Shoutout to Richard Carroll for telling us how to create these!

Since we had some logistical problems last year with transferring hundreds of transplanted plants into our small one car garage during colder temperatures, we decided to make small makeshift greenhouses over our nursery tables that can be stored away during the warmer seasons.

Hopefully this prevents us from having to transfer plants in and out as we prep for our spring sale season! They will all be passively heated and cooled via the sun and the zippered flaps until temperatures settle out. Here's hopin' everything works out because we like to provide healthy plants for you all as soon as possible in the spring.

Either way we love the ability to protect our seed starts from our neighboring squirrels and birds. They just have to wait to let these plants get to size before they go munching about lol.

12/21/2021

Hi everybody,

We are officially done selling for 2021. Thank you all so much for another great year! We are so happy to see an ever growing interest in native plants and ecological gardening here in Cary and our surrounding communities.

We have some exciting news: in 2022 we will be selling at one or more farmer's markets around the Triangle, including the Morrisville Farmer's Market. More updates to come on that soon.

Happy solstice, happy holidays, happy gardening, and happy new year to all!

Hi all,

Apologies for not having our website updated for our inventory. We will have our website setup for online sales by tomorrow night.

We have decided to allow for Sunday pick-ups ONLY for the next 3 weekend (12/5, 12/12, and 12/19). Then we will close shop until next spring.

All plants that we have left for sale will either still have leaves or they will be going dormant.

You are still able to install plants into the ground with some mulch to keep them comfortable. We are just now getting around to doing some installations at our own house this time of the season and will continue our installations throughout December.

Yall stay warm out there!
