Safely completing challenging constructions projects in hospitals, while keeping them fully operational is what L2 is known for!

Surgeries happening below, a ticking clock of deadlines, and a global pandemic and materials shortage keeps our work interesting, but it’s nothing our team can’t handle.

Today, we highlight one of our past projects, Calvert Medical Center Penthouse Mechanical Room Addition.

L2 was responsible for removing the existing roof and building a new single-story addition over the operating rooms. The new building addition tied in horizontally to the existing mechanical penthouse above the surgical center. Critical mechanical systems were upgraded, including (3) new air handling units (AHU).

Our team adapted to material delays, proving that even the most complex projects can be conquered.

The project was completed without disrupting the hospital’s operations by phasing the air handler replacements.

All departments maintained full operation with a hyper focus on patient and worker safety.

We're transforming two spaces at the American Red Cross Donor Center into a brand new blood donation system. This means more donation opportunities and a more comfortable experience for you!

Here's what's happening now:

- Demo is complete, making way for new plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Walls are going up and the rough-in for these systems has begun.
- Electrical conduit, waste pipes, and air conditioning ducts will soon be installed.

This renovation will create a larger, cleaner environment for blood donation, ultimately helping to improve public health in our community.

Michelle comes to us from the owner's side, eager to learn the ropes of general contracting. She finds the world of estimating particularly exciting—a sure sign that she's ready to tackle challenges head-on!

A ☕ connoisseur with a passion for the deep! When she's not snorkeling, she's on land advocating for animals. Her ultimate goal is to become a Project Manager and manage large-scale hospital renovations.

Steve reflects on his recent work with L2 and looks forward to his new role.

"On a recent L2 hospital renovation project leaky drains were causing trouble in the mechanical room, while new babies were arriving upstairs! Our team pulled out the old drains, chipped away some damaged concrete, and reset drains back in the perfect spot. The kitchen stayed open the whole time, feeding hungry doctors, nurses and patients – all thanks to our teamwork!"

Steve also assisted L2 with a challenging x-ray room, and scope room renovation (where they clean all of the medical equipment), and with the installation of negative air pressure fans for a hospital (approx. 40 units) in Alexandria, Virginia.

We look forward to him shifting his perspective onsite to overseeing more trades! We are proud and appreciative of the work Steve has put forth. Congrats!

Thank you to BION, Inc. and Loveless Porter Architects for organizing the event which raised over $100k for CASA CIS, an organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy for children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect.

Immediately after the award, L2 collaborated with the facility construction representative and the design team to target, forecast, and alleviate all critical components with an unfavorable lead time for the necessary project completion date.

L2 and our esteemed subcontracting partners have taken a unique approach to the construction efforts. We are currently installing all MEP infrastructure in the ceiling, a strategy that not only meets the facility's time constraints on critical space needs but also showcases our commitment to innovative solutions.

The project is adjacent to paths of travel for critical patients, and L2 has instituted several safeguards during demolition, including extensive dust control at the point of creation, to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and workers.

We are grateful for the trust and partnership of the INOVA Fairfax Medical Center Campus and are proud of our team's dedication to delivering exceptional results on this important project.
