A beautiful day for the Mom’s Run by Postpartum Support Charleston!
Today I am grateful for this blooming jasmine on my walk to work. It never ceases to amaze me how much joy simple things in nature bring me. Do you have a gratitude practice?
✨I’m proud to announce I am now a PMH-C therapist!✨
What does that mean?
-Demonstrated years of experience working with perinatal clients.
-Taken advanced courses on how to recognize and treat mental health issues in pregnancy and postpartum.
-Passed a standardized exam on the subject.
What a journey it’s been to this certification! I first started working with perinatal clients in 2019 at a domestic violence shelter. Now my practice specializes in working with birthing people and their partners. If you or someone you know needs help adjusting to parenthood or healing from birth or pregnancy experiences, please reach out at newmorningcounseling.com.
Sometimes it takes having children of our own to realize we did not get what we needed as a kid. The acceptance of emotions and understanding that they will come and go is an invaluable skill often missed in childhood.
Reading books like The Feelings Book by is an excellent (and silly 😜) way to teach your child or inner child this lesson.
New Headshot. New Intro.
Hi! I’m Emmie, a licensed mental health counselor.
💫 I work with women healing from past trauma and overwhelmed parents looking for balance.
💫 As a former English teacher, I encourage lifelong learning and often recommend books or other resources.
💫 I love all things birth. I’m also a trained doula so I can help family and friends as they enter parenthood.
💫 Above all else, my goal is that every client I work with feels less alone in their pain.
Check out my website to learn more about working together. www.newmorningcounseling.com
Saying goodbye to the last of my garden’s winter marigolds with great hope for what spring will bring. Who else is looking forward to brighter days ahead?
The transition to parenthood is one of the biggest challenges couples face. If you and your partner need help navigating your relationship as you expand your family, please reach out to New Morning Counseling-Emmie Mai, MA, LPC-A.
Self esteem isn’t found; it’s built.
Armchair Expert Podcast introduced me to this twelve-step saying many years ago. What a gem.
Today marks 2 YEARS at New Morning Counseling!
After two years in my first career of teaching, I left because I felt burnt-out and a shell of myself at age 24. I was worried I would never find a sustainable career. After two years in private practice, I feel gratitude for the work I’ve done and excitement for the work ahead. Here’s to many more years!

My 2024 Resolution: Visit the marsh more.
Recently reminded of this common but powerful metaphor.
What a hectic time late May is! The end of school, graduations, performances, parties, the start of summer camps...
When we are busy caring for others, sometimes we shift our own needs to the back burner. It may be a good time to tune in. How are you caring for yourself?
Self care isn’t just face masks and epsom salt baths.
Sometimes self care looks like getting that routine blood work done that you’ve been putting off.
Sometimes it’s going to therapy to deal with an issue you’d rather avoid.
Self care doesn’t always feel good in the moment.
Moms and birthing people matter too!
“A healthy baby is all that matters.”
Let’s stop repeating this phrase. It so often minimizes the birthing person’s pain or experience. It is important that BOTH baby and mom are healthy.
Are you or someone you know looking for a therapist in the new year? I’ve recently expanded my availability and am accepting new clients.

🛋️ In-person sessions in downtown Charleston
💻 Virtual sessions across South Carolina
I'm committing to spending more time outdoors in the new year. Regularly being in nature has a huge impact on my mental health. May 2023 bring positive change for us all!
New Morning Counseling finally has a home! I cannot wait to welcome clients into this cozy space.
YES! Babes in arms are ALWAYS welcome at appointments. In fact, they are encouraged, because seeing cute babies is one of the best parts of my job.
There are already so many barriers to treatment for moms and birthing people. Having to find childcare or concerns about being away from your baby should not be an additional reason you feel that you cannot commit to taking care of your mental health.
It’s getting high-tech over here!
I’ll soon offer clients doing in-person EMDR sessions a range of bilateral stimulation options including the lightbar, pulsators, and headphones pictured here.

Lots of new faces lately, so I thought I'd reintroduce myself.
👋 Hi! I'm Emmie, and I'm a therapist.
I work with women and teen girls dealing with a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, and during pregnancy and postpartum stages of life.
I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy and EMDR. I'm based in Charleston, but able to connect with clients throughout South Carolina with telehealth.
Since starting this account, I've been blown away by the connections I've made with others in our community. Please reach out if you'd like to connect. I love meeting other like-minded professionals.
🌈The Feelings Wheel
An excellent tool for both kids and adults alike to help identify and discuss emotions.
Also, are you even a therapist if you don’t own a feelings wheel pillow?
MEET THE TEAM
Shere, named for Shere Khan (the tiger in The Jungle Book), is the best co-therapist a girl could ask for. Whether you see her during a session or not, she is always purresent. She’s an excellent listener and picks the opportune time to insert her therapeutic recommendation, usually by jumping on-screen without warning.
