It's gesso day at Gothtistic! I prepped 7 canvases today. What is gesso? It's a bit like primer for canvas and paper. Gesso gives the canvas a richer white color, which I love because it makes colors *pop*! It also prevents the canvas from absorbing the paint. If you use watercolors then you want the canvas to interact with the water and paint and get all those lovely textures, but not so much with acrylics or oil paints. Many artists use one layer going one direction, allow it to dry, then apply it using brush strokes in the other direction. Apply as many layers as you want. (I use between 1 and 4 depending on the project, but I have friends who *insist* upon 8 layers!) If you're starting out using acrylics, I highly recommend using gesso, or buying pre-gessoed canvas. You'll definitely notice a difference. Do you use gesso? What brand do you recommend?
