The new EPA Rules represent a continuation and escalation of the national Democratic Party’s decades-long War on Coal and threatens the livelihood of tens of thousands of West Virginians.

Make no mistake, the rules announced by EPA today are specifically designed to shut down West Virginia’s nine coal-fired power plants and many more across this nation.

We are disappointed in the group of state manufacturers who joined with the Sierra Club and climate extremists to advocate a premature closure of the Pleasants Plant. They enjoy West Virginia as their state of choice in large measure due to low cost, reliable cosl based energy.

Coal was the state’s most significant export in 2022, totaling $3.8 billion, according to Gov Justice. The Netherlands, India and Brazil were among the countries that received coal from West Virginia last year, making the Mountain State the country’s second-largest coal exporter.

The Mountain State remains the nation’s No. 1 producer of met coal — an essential element for making steel — and was responsible for nearly 63% of all the met coal distributed to U.S. coke plants in 2019.

Kudos to the WVPSC, the most deliberative and judicious body in state Government. It reviewed expert testimony re resource adequacy, capacity factors, reliability, economics, and of cost of comparable electric generation and approved keeping Pleasants open without layoffs.

“We spent trillions of dollars in subsidies and mandates putting solar panels and wind turbines everywhere, “Yet we’re still having shortages of fossil fuels.”
Germany invested heavily in solar and wind power. But that didn’t work so well when the winds slowed and clouds appeared.
Germans now pay much more for electricity, triple what Americans pay.
