: BIPOC and people with disabilities are underrepresented as published authors. At Brown Butterfly Publishing, we have a clear focus on impacting such statistics by providing support in an array of ways, including book coaching and publishing consultation:

What does the data show?
Race: As of 2023, 75.58% of authors are white, 5.93% are Black or African American, and 4.93% are Asian. While the percentage of white authors has decreased since 2010, the percentage of Black or African American authors has increased slightly.
Ethnicity: 7.49% of authors are Hispanic and 92.5% are non-Hispanic.

A 2019 Publishers Association survey found only 6.6% of the workforce identified as having a disability, and there aren't any available statistics on disabled authors. Another 2019 study found that only 3.4% of children's books published last year had a disabled main character.

For me, it is very important to “write my own story”. This is especially vital for Brown & Black authors. Historically, we were not the ones writing the very minimum number of children’s books with black characters or stories. (Same for adult novels).
