THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE FAMILIES WHO ALLOWED US TO BE A PART OF THEIR BIRTHING STORIES IN 2023. MANY CONTINUED BLESSINGS!
Rainbow Belly Binding ๐
I typically only take one doula client a month because Iโm a wife, mom and work full time and I want to ensure I have enough time for everyone! But childbirth waits on no oneโฆ Two babies in two weeks ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐
Love this!!
I was today years old when I learnt that the part of the body we affectionately refer to as a pouch has a proper scientific name.
Ladies and gentleman, introducing the panniculus, "an apron of skin and fat that sags below the navel, particularly after pregnancy or weight loss".
While I won't be adding panniculus to my baby names list, I do think we should show it a little more love. Because despite what you might see on social media, having a pouch, or a panniculus on a Sunday, is entirely natural and normal. And to prove it, I refer you to the drawing attached.
This piece of art was created in 23,000 BCE, on the walls of a cave in what we now call France. Opinions vary as to whether it represents a woman in childbirth, or an appreciative ode to the female form, but either way her pouch is clearly visible, and she was important enough and interesting enough and beautiful enough to commit to rock for eternity.
It can be hard to feel good about our bodies after pregnancy and birth, and there's no denying that we have been forever changed by the experience inside and out, but it's even harder when we try to live up to unattainable and constantly shifting beauty standards.
That's why this piece of art brings me such joy, the figure is undeniably and unashamedly female, lumps and bumps and all. And if a woman 25,000 years ago, whose life was undoubtedly much harder than mine, can handle this jelly, then so can I.
How about you?

This was my third cesarean section for no other reason than I had already had two! I was young and misinformed, never even given the option to have a VBAC. My second and third surgeries were 8 years apart, so I was nice and healed.
VBAC - Vaginal Birth After Cesarean
The risk of uterine rupture is higher if you attempt VBAC less than 18 months after your previous delivery. You will find that some have had 3+ C-sections and still had a VBAC.
C-section = Cesarean
There is no set rule when it comes to the number of C-sections you can have. It's documented that the most that one person has had was 12.
****Traditional Cesarean Section**** The classic Cesarean section (C-section) involves a long, vertical incision being made in the midline of the abdomen. Once the skin is incised, the uterus is also incised vertically, and the baby is delivered.
The long incision weakens the abdominal muscles and increases the risk of hernia for years after surgery. Furthermore, once this type of C-section is performed, vaginal birth is not safe for the delivery of future pregnancies.
****Lower Uterine Segment Cesarean**** For this type of C-section, an incision is made just above the p***c hairline just above the bladder. This is a horizontal incision that cuts through the underlying uterus as well as the skin. This is one of the most common methods of C-section delivery used today.
After the surgery, the risk of bleeding and other complications such as hernia are minimal. The surgical wound repairs easier than the wound that remains after a traditional C-section. Furthermore, a woman may still choose a vaginal delivery for future births.

Doulas are needed!!
๐๐ฝNUCHAL HAND๐

A nuchal hand is one of several compound presentations where an extremity is alongside the presenting part of the baby at birth. The most common type of compound presentation is a Nuchal Hand, which is where the baby has its hand right up by its face during birth.
๐ค
Most babies will have a hand or two by their face in utero and will retract the hand during birth. But sometimes baby will keep their hand in place and descend in this fashion.
๐ค
The most common signs of a compound presentation is a โslowerโ labor or baby having difficulty descending or rotating. But sometimes thereโs no clear sign of a compound presentation until baby is actually already emerging.
๐ค
This is not something that should be an automatic cesarean.
๐ค
Often times, patience and freedom of movement is all that is needed to birth these babies vaginally.

DILATION STATION! ๐ฏ
Aka the "Get it done position." ๐ช๐ฝ Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!
๐ฝyou are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
๐ฝthe bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
๐ฝyou are using gravity
๐ฝyou are opening your pelvis.
๐ฝyou are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
๐ฝyou can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.
I call it the โdilation stationโ for a reason. Iโve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. Itโs not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that ๐ค

Here in the US the beds in Labor and delivery are like Transformers in how they can be adapted for mom. This is a great position - lovely open hips, mom can rest easily, her sacrum isnโt restricted in any way.
๐๐ฝ
Did your L&D nurse help change the bed for different positions for you?

The misinformation and lack thereof that I received as a young mother led to me having multiple c-sections. Don't let that be you!
You are not a milk factory. As you feed, your child's heart rate slows, their attachment hormones spike, their microbiome is nourished and their brain falls into a deep, restorative calm, much like adult brains do during meditation.โ
โ
Suckling causes oxytocin release in both mother and child, promoting a felt sense of wellbeing, safety, love and contentment. โ
โ
Oxytocin lowers blood pressure and stress reactivity in mothers. In infants, oxytocin increases resilience to stress and drives the formation of more oxytocin receptors in the amygdala (for healthy social behaviour and a lowered risk for anxiety). โ
โ
Simultaneous oxytocin release, repeated over time, changes both mother and infant brains, in ways that underpin long term attachment and synchronicity. It literally rewires brains in favour of love and wellbeing.โ
โ
You are not a milk factory.โ You are a retreat, a safe space, a perfect tonic.โ
โ
You are laying the foundations of long term wellbeing with every feed. โ
โ
You are a hero.โ

Wow!
That's it... That's the post.... In all situations ESPECIALLY in childbirth, YOUR VOICE MATTERS!!
You can hire a doula at ANY TIME during your pregnancy!! We understand that everyone's situation and preferences are unique, so that may look like 20 weeks for one person and 36 weeks for another. Either way, ROW is happy to support you and your decision.
