Summit Coffee
A certified organic coffee roaster + wholesaler with cafés in Charlotte, Asheville, Davidson, and Roswell (Georgia). Expanding into other markets nationwide.
so the funny thing is...we ran out of bags. Amid all the chaos (and revelry) around our roasting warehouse during the 14-day sprint to fulfill the thousands of coffee orders in support of our Asheville teammates, our 5-month bag inventory became more like a 5-week bag inventory. Oops.
I’d feel way, way worse about it if it wasn’t because the pallet of green Summit bags went to good homes for a good cause. But, alas, we found ourselves in quite the predicament and that’s when we decided that we could turn a wrong into a right, at the right moment. So we’ve had some bad ideas in the past, but perhaps none missed quite as hard as when we agreed to launch Summit in Walmart a few years ago, albeit under a new brand name: Your Morning Coffee. We were all excited about these pretty bags in some 75 Walmart stores, but before we could create a brand around YMC those friends from Walmart decided they didn’t want us anymore. And we were stuck holding the bag(s), quite literally. About 10,000 of them.
These pretty YMC bags have gathered dust in 2 different warehouses, but NOW are getting called into primetime so we can continue to sell y’all bags of coffee. I love the creativity our team brought to this tough/weird/stressful situation, and getting to recycle a failure to help us recover from a wonderful success feels like a fitting way to bring 2024 toward a close.
SO, for the next 6 weeks or so you’ll find ALL of your favorite Summit coffees in some pretty, and pretty different, bags. Thanks for understanding, and thinking we’re silly and fun, and we’ll be back at ya with those green bags before you know it.

It’s so fun seeing our coffee in your homes. We are truly humbled by everyone that bought coffee last week to support our Asheville staff - it’s been incredible to see.
Our downtown Asheville cafe is back open today! What a lovely story of teamwork and resilience to get the open. Baristas from both Asheville cafes are slinging lattes and spreading good vibes.
It's been quite a 2 weeks, but let's be part of building Western NC back up in the little ways that we can -- one coffee at a time.
Our hearts, energies, and resources continue to be pointed toward helping Western NC and the Summit team in Asheville. We will continue to share updates, but we encourage you to follow along with for the most up-to-date ways you can help and stay engaged.
We remain committed, at the same time, to bringing positive energy to our other communities, and one way this is happening is through our morning run clubs. This week, we’re going to be popping up at all our run clubs to celebrate and support YOU. Run clubs have helped us be more involved with our direct communities and we’re so, so thankful that you choose to run with us. We’ll be selling limited time runners merch - a hat, socks, and a sticker - this week only!! So catch us at the cafes and times below. Oof almost forgot to mention - all runners will receive a FREE cup of drip coffee if you join one of our run clubs this week 😉

🙏🏽 Gratitude Post 💚
What we've seen this week in our little circle is the most tremendous outpouring of Generosity of Spirit. There have been SO many people who showed up in support of Summit's Asheville team, who've taken our simple Sunday morning idea and made it something of real substance and significance. And it all comes from a community of people who care so, so much. That's you.
Some 1,759 orders later, we've run out of coffee (for now), and had about 27 different people filling bags and grinding beans and packaging packages. There are uncountable people to thank, but while we're heads down still trying to get these orders out as quickly as possible, allow us a moment to grab the mic and shout out the real difference makers in this little idea that could.
Our roastery staff, all FOUR of them, have gone so far above the call of duty in all aspects of their work. Michayla, Kenzi, Parker, Dave, y'all are the real behind-the-scenes MVPs of this effort. And for the dozens of other Summit people who've shown up to help, thank you.
Also, there are so many coffee companies who've put their own brands and beans second to buy some Summit and support the cause -- how cool is that? We are unduly grateful to have friends like , and .
To the nearly 2,000 people who've ordered, the 4,000 people who've shared our Instagram post, it's because of your willingness that we've been able to help take care of the Summit Asheville team. It's the literal definition of a small act making a real impact. Also, for all of those people who are running goods to Asheville -- you're among the real heroes this week.
We'll have more to say, and share, in the coming days and weeks, but we believe in the power of gratitude and when we get to feel the Generosity of Spirit vibes, we want to pass them along. We're unworthy of this community, but forever humbled by the opportunity to work with you every day.
So much love 💚 (and coffee). And, yes, we've seen the cafe in the WSJ.
💔 It's with the heaviest of hearts we share that Summit's cafe in Asheville's River Arts District is gone.
The devastation of this week's flooding in Western North Carolina was so much worse than our worst imagination. Our cafe, which has served the RAD community since 2017, is just one of hundreds of businesses, thousands of homes, that was destroyed by Hurricane Helene. We are suffering a deep level of sadness over losing this cafe, and also for all of WNC and the people whose lives have been turned upside down.
While we grieve and process, we also need to act. Please help us continue to support the RAD baristas as long as we can. When the flooding subsides, there won't be a cafe to go back to. This week, we're going to give 100% of proceeds from any and all online coffee orders to a fund for that team. Head to the website, buy a bag or three, buy some for your friends, and we'll get the orders to you as quickly as we can and send the money to Asheville.
There's a lot more to be said in the coming days and weeks about what losing the RAD cafe means to Summit. But for now, let's channel our sadness into action and help the Asheville community.
Our hearts are going out to Western North Carolina 🤍

2️⃣6️⃣ years of Summit. 🎂
I have spent the better part of my morning scrolling through years and years of photos, trying to find the right 1 or the right 10 that summarize what Summit has meant. Not just to me, but to the team here, to the team of years past, and mostly, to all of you. And the 2 things that keep popping out of these decades of photos are gratitude and joy.
26 years is a long time. Summit has lived through so many eras. I met my future wife at Basecamp (when it was just Summit), and we've spent nearly 11 years raising our kids in this downtown Davidson cafe. The eras have spanned from Craig and Steve (and Dave), to Tim and Brett and Becky (and Dave), to Andrew and Dora, Jamie and Evan, Sarah and Emma. And Dave, of course, who's been in this story since 1998.
In the thousands of snapshots of time, it's evident to me how fun this whole ride has been. How lucky are we to not only have done this for 26 years, but to continue to do this every day? How lucky are we that so many beautiful people have come into our lives, created indelible memories for and with Summit? Each year that spins around and Luz passes me the mic to talk about our anniversary is another opportunity for me to be so immensely grateful that Summit is still a thing, still doing its thing, and that so many people find joy in our little thing every morning, afternoon, and evening.
26 years isn't as notable as 25, I suppose, but we take very little for granted about keeping this record spinning. So really, we owe so much of this all to YOU, for keeping us happy and joyful and energized and open. For the tens of thousands (maybe hundreds?) of you who've had coffee or beer or pastries at Basecamp since 1998, thanks for being part of this story. What an incredible honor it is to write this post yet again, to find the photos that summarize all my feels.
With love, gratitude, and enthusiasm for what's next,
Brian
