Moore & Van Allen (MVA) receives Safe Alliance’s 2024 Commitment to Justice Award in recognition of the firm’s Pro Bono work and commitment to supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. MVA Litigation and Privacy & Data Security Associate Rachel LaBruyere accepted the award on behalf of the firm. In attendance was MVA Member Sarah Byrne, Associates Precious McLaughlin and Haley Sink, and MVA Member Amanda Franklin, who currently serves on the board for Safe Alliance.

During International Women’s Month, Moore & Van Allen is honored to celebrate our recent recognitions.

Moore & Van Allen (MVA) is thrilled to once again participate in the North Carolina Legal Feeding Frenzy — a food and fund drive competition among all North Carolina law firms, law schools, and organizations to assist Feeding The Carolinas. The Frenzy, which is held throughout the month of March, is an annual joint program of the NCBA Young Lawyers Division and Feeding the Carolinas food banks that aims to fight hunger across the state.

On Saturday, March 2, over 40 Moore & Van Allen (MVA) Attorneys and Staff participated in the 45th Annual Truist Corporate Cup, which is Charlotte’s Oldest Road Race and one of the YMCA’s largest fundraisers. MVA received the Corporate Team Division 2 Champion award. Teams earned points for runner/walker participation in the race, mileage walked or ran prior to the race, volunteerism, team spirit and giving back to the community.

MVA participants logged almost 2,200 miles since January 1, 2024! Our team really showed out on race day with Melissa Veronda (Litigation) finishing first overall in her age group, and Reed DeMent (Finance) finishing with a new PR! Following the theme of Black History Month 2024, “African Americans and the Arts,” MVA’s Black Attorney Resource Group (BARG) culminated the month of February by hosting a networking dinner at the Harvey B. Gantt Center. BARG joined together to celebrate the arts, culture, and community with an art walk, an announcement of the 2024 BARG Leadership Team, the reveal of the group’s new logo, and an opportunity to perfect their elevator pitch. https://www.mvalaw.com/news-11410

MVA is proud to celebrate Black History Month. As we honor the 2024 Black History Month Theme “African Americans and the Arts” stay tuned to our feed as we highlight our community and celebratory events led in part by the MVA Black Attorney’s Resource Group.

Moore & Van Allen (MVA) is pleased to announce that the firm has expanded its leadership structure to include a chief operating officer (COO) position and welcomes Elizabeth Satterfield to this role.

MVA’s operations and finance functions were previously the responsibility of Executive Director Matthew Gillespie, who will be retiring after 24 years of service this Spring. Gillespie’s responsibilities will transition to the new COO and CFO roles.

“We are thrilled to have Elizabeth join Moore & Van Allen as our new Chief Operating Officer. She has proven to be a pioneering leader in today’s rapidly evolving legal industry, and her leadership style and integrity align perfectly with our culture and values,” said MVA Managing Partner and Chair Thomas L. Mitchell. “We are excited about the growth the firm has experienced in recent years in terms of number of attorneys, capabilities, practice areas, and attorney development and feel this leadership expansion will allow us to better support the firm going forward. We are also grateful for Matt’s many contributions to the firm over the years, including his leadership in guiding us through these organizational changes.”

Satterfield, has held various law firm leadership roles, most recently as Proskauer Rose LLP’s Innovation and Practice Solutions Officer. A former practicing attorney, she has extensive knowledge of legal operations and law firm management, with particular depth in knowledge management, legal project management, pricing, and innovation.

Satterfield is known for her experience in developing client and operational innovations, her focus on business analytics, and her engaging and personable leadership style. She will work closely with Mitchell, the firm’s Management Committee, and team and practice leaders on all aspects of business operations and strategy.

Today, we honor and remember the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Moore & Van Allen (MVA) White Collar, Regulatory Defense and Investigations Members Valecia McDowell and Tanisha Palvia taught the Internal Investigations course during the winter session for Duke Law.

During this course, students studied the range of legal and practical issues in the context of in-house investigations of potential illegal conduct by corporate employees and officers. Students also participated in simulated exercises involving interviews of company employees in the course of a hypothetical investigation.

Moore & Van Allen’s 6th Annual Diversity Conference will be held on January 19, 2024. This conference is an exclusive opportunity for 1L students to gain early exposure to one of North Carolina’s leading law firms. Students selected will hear from Moore & Van Allen’s partners, top clients, and fellow leaders in law about the climate of diversity in the legal industry, and how the firm is leading initiatives for change. Law360 published an article titled “Moore & Van Allen Adds Deputy GC To NC House Speaker,” on December 11 highlighting Moore & Van Allen (MVA) Director of Public Affairs Beth Friedrich joining the firm this month. The article focused on Beth’s move to MVA after three years of working for Speaker Tim Moore. The MVA HR Team organized a teambuilding event to benefit Classroom Central. The team organized 800 Kits for a Cause to support Charlotte Mecklenburg School students. Classroom Central fosters equity in education by providing teachers and students with the free resources they need to succeed.
