To mark the 400th anniversary of William Byrd’s death, Zephyrus presents a Christmas program with music by Byrd and his teacher, colleague, and friend, Thomas Tallis. Tallis’s monumental 7-part mass on the chant Puer natus est nobis was written for the grandest of occasions, a Christmas day service at the English court of Queen Mary with Philip II of Spain and his own choir present as well. Byrd’s settings of the other texts for Christmas mass, by contrast, were written for private services well away from court, in the most intimate country house chapels. Together they showcase the best seasonal music from the golden age of English Renaissance music.
Mark your calendar for one (or both!) of these performances. Christmas music by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) and William Byrd (1543-1623). You can't go wrong!

Please join us for From Darkness to Light: Music by Women Composers on Saturday, April 29th at 7:30 PM at St. Paul's Memorial Church and Sunday, April 30th at 4:30 PM at the Charlottesville Waldorf School Pavilion. The latter concert is pay-what-you-will. This is going to be a great concert! It even includes a commissioned piece by local composer, Judith Shatin. Mark your calendars, and don't miss it!
We will be singing a Choral Evensong for the 7:30 p.m. service at St. Paul's Memorial Church this Sunday, February 19, with music by William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes and Cecilia McDowall. Evensong is a form of Evening Prayer that draws from the medieval Latin offices of Vespers and Compline. This service is unique to churches of the Anglican Communion and has remained unchanged for centuries. Most of the service is sung by the choir to special choral settings of the liturgy. Please join us!

Zephyrus presents the Requiem of Manuel Cardoso in two concerts to benefit Ukrainian war refugees.
The Requiem mass in honor of the dead dates back to at least the 2nd century, and music for the service is found in 10th-century sources. One of the most sublime settings of the Requiem is that of Portuguese composer Manuel Cardoso, published in 1625. Richly scored for six voices, the work employs some of the harmonic innovations of Claudio Monteverdi within an idiom reminiscent of Palestrina. As our society reflects on the events of the last two years and mourns the loss of so many people and indeed so many things that we held dear, may this concern allow us the space to mourn these losses.
Masks are recommended at the indoor concert, and we ask only that you be fully vaccinated. Both concert venues are wheelchair accessible.
We hope to see you there!
