We stayed true to the mid-century modern design in this 1974 home by working with architects to complete this whole house renovation before the home went on the market this summer.

Three ways to bring summer to your kitchen:

1️⃣ Swap out heavier, darker dishes and servingware for lighter, brighter pieces. Souvenir tea towels and summery cookbooks can also be pulled in.

2️⃣ Purchase or propagate a few plants with trailing vines for your island or shelving.

3️⃣ Don’t overlook the produce section for big bowls of summer peaches and apricots and baskets of tomatoes and pots of basil. No need to store in the fridge in summertime!

A tip for a space with a lot of right angles: 📐
Add curves! Think round mirrors and light fixtures, rounded sofas or headboards, arched doorways, and curved furniture like the rounded storage cabinets that are having a moment right now. You’ll be surprised how bringing in curves softens a room!

We’ve teamed up with a few other vendors in the industry to build this custom playhouse! Raffle tickets are available for $10 each or 3 for $25 and all proceeds benefit Piedmont CASA - Charlottesville.

The playhouse will be delivered to the raffle winner (or the winner can donate to a local foster family identified by CASA). Raffle ends May 17. Honored to support and the work they do for children in Charlottesville!

We think garages are the unsung heroes of possibility for a new or existing home. The progression of this two-car detached garage at our North Garden build includes a full second-story in-law suite. Other possibilities for garages: studios or at-home offices, event spaces, ample storage, short-term rental space.

It’s been a while since we showed our faces around here (if you know us, this is intentional 😉). We are James and Rob Robertson, brothers who grew up and learned our trades in Charlottesville. We launched Robertson Renovations in 2004 and expanded the business to include design in 2017 when we added Kelly Trout, our in-house architect to the team!

Although our scope of work varies – from outdoor living spaces to interior renovations, additions, and complete new construction homes – the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is consistent. We want every client to be inspired by and proud to live in the home we helped create.

One of the things we help clients consider during the Schematic Design Feasibility Study is flow. How does the family enter the home? What are the common traffic patterns? How does one area of the home relate to another? The goal is to allow for an ease in and through the home with a flow is customized to the client and their unique space.

If you can believe it, this original 3-bedroom home was a 1300 sq ft structure (as seen in the left of the photo). We added 2000 sq ft to include a new kitchen, living room, scullery, library, bathroom with no-curb shower, mudroom and bonus room, plus a porch, exterior siding, and trim. Now our homeowners can remain on the land they love in a home that has everything they need.
