TIP 8: Consolidate or Refinance high interest debt to low/no interest

TIP 7: Resolve delinquent accounts, charge-offs, or collections

TIP 6: Keep Old Accounts Open but Unused.
Closing accounts lowers your available credit and increases your credit utilization ratio.
Keeping them open, but unused keeps that available credit number higher. Even if you don't use them, the long history of using that account really aids in your credit scores strength.

TIP 5: Boost A Thin Credit File
A thin file means that you don't have enough history to actually generate a score.
There are ways we can help improve your score by using your banking history in addition to your credit history. If you are renting, there are services that will report your rental payments on your behalf, which will actually boost your score as well.
Different programs have different requirements on how to show credit outside of your credit report.

Tip 4: Limit your credit inquiries!
Soft inquiries are ok and include:
* Checking your own credit
* A potential employer checking your credit
* Credit card offers
The big one here is hard pull inquiries that do affect your credit score. Hard inquiries include applications for new lines of credit (credit card, mortgage, and auto loans).
An occasional inquiring isn't a big deal. But having several in a short period of time can really impact your score.

TIP 3: Aim for 30% credit utilization or less. What does that mean? It means that if you add up all of your available credit, you are using 30% or less.
Let me give you an example - If you had a limit of $10,000, you would aim to keep your credit charges no more than $3,000 or 30% of the limit. When you max out your credit card to the limit of $10,000, it actually hurts your score.

TIP 2: Pay on time. This sounds obvious, but it's the single most important way to impact your score.
Create a finding system for keeping track of monthly bills. Set due dates so you know when a bill is coming up or consider setting an automatic bill payment from your bank account.
