Be an advocate for your dog!

They can’t speak. We are their voice.

You know your dog best and you know what is normal and what is not.

I say this from a good place, not a place of blame. I want to share my experience in hopes to help someone else should they ever experience it. I have gone over every minute of September 4th and replayed that day in my mind hundreds of times.

Bloat is something every dog owner of a large deep chested animal fears. I know I did. I did research. I took the recommended precautions. I picked the brain of several colleagues that had gone through it with their dogs.

Even though Knox didn’t show the “typical” symptoms of bloat, I knew in my gut that’s what it was. I knew something wasn’t right because I knew him best.

These working dogs are so stoic with an incredible pain tolerance. We push their limits and comfort levels on a regular basis and teach them to fight through it and they will win. We teach them that they are superman and there’s nothing they can’t win or do.

Knox walked himself into the emergency vet, presented well (even his X-rays fooled them as his stomach had rotated 360 degrees several times, so it looked almost normal), his vitals were normal after initially only being a little elevated when we first got there, he was so patient with everything and everyone. He was himself… stoic and knew he just had to fight through it and he would be fine.

I trusted the specialists, the professionals… and by the time they went into action it was too late. He fooled them because that’s what he had been taught over and over... to fight to survive. That’s what made him so special and so good at what he did. That’s what made me trust him with all of my heart on the street. He had the fight, the will and the determination.

In my opinion even the professionals don’t give these working dogs the credit they deserve. They are unique. They are elite. They are mentally and physically tough. They rarely show pain. They will fight until the end.

Fight for your dog. Be their advocate. Speak up even when you might feel out of place. Act fast. Time isn’t on your side with bloat.
