For a certain generation of Jewish Americans, Israel and the memory of the Holocaust represented twin pillars of civil religion, argues Louis Newman, a scholar of Jewish ethics and religion, on the latest episode of Evolve: Groundbreaking Jewish Conversations' podcast.

While these pillars may have shown cracks for decades, Newman says they came crashing down on Oct. 7,2023. What can we learn from our history? Where do we go from here?

Today marks 9 months since the events of October 7. While in Tel Aviv this morning, the faculty and staff were stuck in traffic due to protests. Their secular taxi driver told them, "It is in God's hands. No woman or man can bring an end to this because we are so divided."

When it comes to combating systemic racism, everyone has something to learn.

That’s one reason why faculty members at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College are engaging in a year-long process — one rooted in the Jewish practice of Mussar — to confront anti-Black racism in themselves and the college environment.

Reconstructing Judaism is committed to leading “Jewish efforts to dismantle systemic racism, and to advance racial diversity, equity and inclusion within the Reconstructionist movement. What's the connection between African-American liberation and the Exodus story? Check out this video from Rabbi Sandra to learn.

Today, the American Jewish community, and our Reconstructionist community in particular, is racially diverse. Many of us have Black family members, and many of us are Black. It is my hope that we bring the celebration of Juneteenth to our synagogues and havurot and participate in its celebrations within our communities. Please consider some of Reconstructing Judaism’s resources and publications on racial justice as you commemorate Juneteenth: https://www.reconstructingjudaism.org/racial-justice/

Juneteenth is a celebration of African-American freedom. We celebrate what it means to live freely in the United States. In our celebrations, we must remember that for many, freedom is a journey. The fight for freedom for all is not over. There is still work to be done. Juneteenth is an important reminder of why we fight: the struggle for freedom for all must continue because, in the words of Emma Lazarus: until we are all free, none of us are actually free.

Looking to learn more about the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Check out this 4-part series on the conflict by Reconstructing Judaism's Israel Affairs Specialist, Rabbi Maurice Harris.

Rabbi Harris uses a dual-narrative approach to the study of the conflict. A dual-narrative approach emphasizes that Israelis and Palestinians have each developed their own narratives of the conflict. By learning both of these narratives well, we become better able to understand the assumptions, feelings, and motivations of the people involved in the conflict, and we also gain insight into why this particular conflict contains so many disputed facts.

Reconstructing Judaism is a vibrant, imaginative and intellectually curious organization that trains the next generation of rabbis, supports and uplifts congregations and havurot and encourages young people to be their best selves—while shaping what it means to be Jewish today and defining the Jewish future.

Reconstructing Judaism and the broader Reconstructionist movement welcomes your voice, questions and participation in something larger—creating a boldly relevant Judaism for today and tomorrow.
