NANCY M. WELCH, MD TO RECEIVE CHESAPEAKE FIRST CITIZEN AWARD FOR 2023
CHESAPEAKE – Nancy M. Welch, MD has been named Chesapeake’s First Citizen for 2023 by The Chesapeake Rotary Club and The Chesapeake Rotary Foundation. The award will be presented to Dr. Welch at a banquet to be held at the Chesapeake Conference Center on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 6:00 p.m.
Dr. Welch, who is board certified in both pediatrics and public health and general preventive medicine, has served as a public health director in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1976, first for the Alleghany Health District, and then for the City of Chesapeake since 1987. Dr. Welch holds a bachelor’s degree from Lynchburg College, a doctor of medicine from Duke University, and a master’s degree in business administration from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in health administration from University of Colorado.
Having retired as a colonel from the United States Army Reserve where she honorably served her country, Dr. Welch’s adult life has been defined by public service. She spearheaded the creation of Health Chesapeake, a local consortium of organizations with the mission of serving the community’s most vulnerable citizens.
Additionally, Dr. Welch has been a long-time member of the Emergency Operations Center in Chesapeake and played a pivotal role in the City’s response to many natural and man- made disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously, Dr. Welch was named as the recipient of the Lynchburg College Distinguished Alumni Award for 2012, the Hampton Roads YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Medicine, the 2013 Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Marian P. Whitehurst Women in Leadership Award, an honorable doctorate degree from Lynchburg College in 2014, as well as the 2020 Woman of the Year Award from the Women’s Division, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Chesapeake.
In many ways, Nancy M. Welch, MD has contributed greatly to making Chesapeake a better place to live and work and has exemplified the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”
We had a great presentation by Dr. Penny Shultz, Assistant Director of School Safety, and Bob Geis, Deputy City Manager, on the school safety taskforce progress. Thank you to School Board Member Amanda Dean, Lt. W. Chadwick and Officer D. Cooke for attending.
