The Elemental Dog, LLC
Barb is a Certified Nose Work Instructor though the NACSW. K9 Nose Work (r) is a new, fast-growing sport for almost any dog.
She enjoys teaching K9 Nose Work(r) to dogs and handlers from around southeast Wyoming, northeast Colorado, and western Nebraska. Canine scent detection games encourage your dog to use his natural hunting and tracking abilities to locate target odors. K9 Nose Work is inspired by the work of professional detection dogs, but designed for companion dogs. Dogs first learn to search for food in boxes.

As the sport has grown so have the problems. I haven't really seen any of the noted behaviors (except talking about searches before the trial is over --- just stop!), but I believe that these things are happening. Just remember that NW/SW is a game and we're there to have fun with our dogs! Keep it chill. Keep it fun!

Interesting changes coming to NACSW ORTs in January. The minimum container spacing will decrease to 3' (from 4') and the test duration will decrease to 2:30 minutes (from 3:00). These changes make sense.

First day of my Distractors In Containers class at Everything Dog was this afternoon! What fun! The dogs and handlers are doing great and learning soooo fast! Can't wait for next week!!!
Trialing in the heat!!! Tips and Hacks to survive it.
š Thinking about a new workshop for folks new to crating out of their cars for summer trials and learning tips and hacks to keep their dogs cool enough to work effectively. Iāve been trialing with my double-coated dogs in K9 Nose Work since I started over 10 years ago. Car crating is required for almost all NACSW trials. Even in AKC SW, we run out of my van. Iāve tried a lot of shading/cooling strategies over the years. Some didnāt work well for us and some work great. Iām thinking about hosting a 2-hour no-dog workshop at Everything Dog in Loveland on a weekend day or weekday evening to go over whatās worked best for us and what hasnāt worked at all. I envision this as an interactive session with everyone sharing their best ideas. Iāll bring the gear I have for folks to take a look at. Iāll put together a sources list as well. Just trying to gauge interest. Please comment below if you would be interested and what evenings/days would work for you. š
Super duper congratulations to Team Groot! They earned their NW2 in Leadville with panache! First in containers and first place overall! Groot and Danielle have worked hard building their NW skills and all that effort showed in Leadville on Sunday! Good work!!!
Distractors in Containers is a New Advanced Topics in Nose Work/Scent Work class at Everything Dog in Loveland! This will be a focused 4-week class to teach you and your dog to work past any distractor in containers - AKC or NACSW. Class will cover the 'tools' needed to teach your dog that only odor pays in a container search and how to maintain those skills over the long term. Dogs should be on at least birch, anise, and clove and able to work closed containers as in AKC Novice or NACSW ORT or NW1. Class starts Thursday 7/25 and runs 2:00 to 4:00 for four weeks. The training rooms at Everything Dog are now air conditioned!!! Indoor crating is also available. Please contact me with any questions!
Advance Topics-Distractors in Containers | Everything Dog Both NACSW and AKC may have distractors in containers. As competitors move up in trial levels those distractors can be very high value and very challenging. This four-week short course will give you and your dog the tools to learn to work past virtually any contained distractor. Working past distrac...

Good luck to the teams competing in Gunnison and Wellington this weekend! Have fun and the rest will come!
Just a reminder about the āAsk For Informationā option at NACSW trials. Itās a great way to turn a tanking day into a training opportunity.
What fun! Sniff & Gos are so useful in our training! You can ask for as much information as is helpful to you or run blind. If you can take advantage, please do. I'd be there with my crew if I weren't headed to Montana that weekend. This S&G is NW3/ELT, there is also one at the NW1/NW2 level. Check out the NoCo Unleashed LLC webpage and get training! Even if only run in AKC SW, this will be a very useful training event.
We know how important (and fun!) it is to practice Nose Work in new and unique locations. Whether or not you are trialing, going to a new location to work hides that are blind to you, the handler, is an amazing learning opportunity for your team. We are so excited that Summit Dog Training in Fort Collins, CO is making their space available to us for our new Sniff & Go events this summer!
Our NW3/Elite Level Searches Sniff & Go is coming up on June 15th, 2024 from 4:30 - 7:30pm!
- Teams will have the opportunity to work all four NACSW trial elements, Interiors, Exteriors, Vehicles, and Containers.
- Each search will be run like a trial, with a judge, a time limit, and level appropriate information.
- You will receive feedback from the judges on each search, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions as time allows.
- Each search will be designed to test your skills with unknown numbers of hides, and gain experience with the new challenges that you may encounter at NW3, Elite, and ELT-S trials.
- Teams do not need to be competing to participate, but dogs should be confident in working multiple hides with various challenges presented such as close proximity, elevated, and inaccessible hides.
We expect these tickets to sell fast, so we recommend grabbing yours before itās too late! https://www.nocounleashed.com/event-details/trial-prep-sniff-and-go
Just a reminder that the 1st Leadville trial (7/12-14) opens for entries Tuesday 6/28 at 10:00 AM! ELT/NW3/ELT-S/NW2
Looking for an easy to get into NW3 or L1I? Maybe even some NW1 spots might open up later this month. Already have these titles or not yet eligible? Or just want to practice? Think FEO! FEO is a super chance to practice in a real trial environment. A really good chance for all these things in Columbus!
It's an easy peasy drive to Columbus, MT - just 40 miles west of Billings. No I-70 traffic. None! Traffic on I-25? Not in Wyoming or Montana! All you need to do is get past FoCo and it's clear sailing! I heard a bunch of folks from Colorado Springs are going up as is the World Famous, Pen-Eating Collie from Cheyenne!!! Come join us and support the growing K9 NW program in Montana!!
Canine Connection It is not appropriate to contact or visit the event location prior to the event date, nor should training take place on event grounds once an event is approved/announced. Our locations are real life search environments where people work, go to school, etc. Pre-event contact or visits risk the host l...
Happy sniffing to all the Teams competing in Montrose and Fort Collins this weekend!!
