Today we spotlight Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler for Women’s History Month. Dr. Crumpler was born on Feb 8, 1831 in the state of Delaware and became the first African-American female physician in 1864. She grew up in Pennsylvania and obtained her medical degree from the New England Female Medical College in Boston, MA. She practiced general medicine.

Among Dr. Crumpler’s many accomplishments is the fact that she authored a book titled “A Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts” which was published in 1883. The book was filled with medical advice for women and children. This publication is known to be one of the first medical publications by an African American.

She also joined other black physicians in caring for freed slaves, worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau and other missionary groups.

Her strength and perseverance to achieve all that she did during the era that she lived in is remarkable and motivating!

Breastfeeding is recommended for most but it does not come easy for every mom.

👶🏾 83% of babies in 2015 were ever breastfed
👶🏼 58% of babies were breastfed at 6 months
👶🏿 Only 25.5% were breastfed at 12 months
*According to the CDC

It will typically take approximately 1 week for your breast milk production to increase and become steady. It normally takes 6 weeks after delivery for breast milk to mature and to get in a good rhythm with the baby. Breastfeeding has many benefits but achieving them can be challenging!

Steps to Successfully Breastfeeding
1. Plan Ahead: read, take classes, prepare yourself mentally
2. Be Patient: don’t rush nature, be patient with your body and your baby
3. Ask for Help: get help from lactation consultants, nurses, family and friends

Your OB/GYN can be a great resource as well!

Visit womenshealth.gov/breastfeeding for more information.

Timeline photos 20/08/2020

You burn calories making breast milk and while expressing the milk to give to your baby, about 500-700 extra calories/day.

This extra calorie burning can help aid in after delivery weight loss, speeding up the time needed to get back to pre-pregnancy weight.

Burning more calories also means you have to maintain good nutrition while breastfeeding. So moms, don’t forget to take care of yourself while tending to your new little one.

Timeline photos 20/08/2020

Some of the benefits of breastfeeding include:

🤱🏽 Increased bonding between mother and baby
🤱 Decreased rate of common childhood infections
🤱🏿 Decreased rates of ovarian and breast cancer in women who breastfeed their babies

Liquid Gold = Colostrum = Earliest Breastmilk

Colostrum is the thick, sticky, yellow-ish/white liquid that comes before your main breastmilk is made. It is packed with nutrients and gives the baby immunity to many germs. Colostrum stays in the breast milk for the first few weeks.
