Dot's Last Day
For 27 years, Dot has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to pediatric patients at Lurie Children’s through her weekly Story Time with Dot Skylight TV show in the Panda Cares Center of Hope. Recently, Dot’s shared her final story time with patients and families at Lurie Children’s as she moves on to the next chapter in her life- retirement!
While staying in the hospital, patients can join Dot’s weekly story time in person or watch the broadcast from the televisions in their hospital rooms thanks to the closed-circuit hospital channel, Skylight TV. Patients who cannot attend story time in person watch and even call in from their hospital rooms and participate like a live radio show. As a seasoned story teller, Dot has a special talent for including everyone in the audience in her stories and music.
Dot will be passing the book to a new storyteller, Miss Nanna, who will continue her legacy of providing an inclusive and positive space for patients and their families to thrive and have fun while overcoming tough challenges in the hospital.

Lurie Children’s Art Therapy
Creative Arts Therapies Week continues with a celebration of our amazing Art Therapy team who use a variety of art materials at the bedside, or in a group setting, to help improve the physical and emotional well-being of patients. Medical items are also used in the creative process to desensitize and offer exploration and control over materials used during their treatment.
Art therapy provides a valuable space for patients like Zayden, Dasarae and Aybrie to build confidence, communicate how they feel about their treatment and diagnosis, cope with long-term hospitalization, explore mental health goals, learn how to confront challenges and manage stressful situations, and ultimately empowers them to engage in creative self-expression.
Lurie Children’s also offers adaptive devices to increase accessibility to art for patients with varying mobility needs.
Our Art Therapy internship program provides graduate students with their required clinical experience as they work toward their art therapy/counseling degree and future licensure, and the team is proud to have Celina currently on staff from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago!
Ask your care team for more information about the art therapy referral process.
Nothing boosts your mood on a Monday quite like music can! #MoodBoosterMonday During Creative Arts Therapies Week, we’re celebrating all of the talented and compassionate staff members who offer our pediatric patients a unique outlet to explore their diagnoses and process the feelings that come along with them. Lurie Children’s amazing team of music therapists supports patients of all ages in their hospitalization journeys, providing them a safe, playful, autonomous and healing experience through music and creativity. If you’re a caregiver interested in this resource for your child, talk to your care team about a referral. Keep an eye out for more from our Art Therapy team later this week! #musictherapy #pediatrics #all4your1 #creativeartstherapiesweek

Zara's message of gratitude
Undergoing a medical procedure can bring a range of emotions and unknowns. Our child life specialists help children and their families understand and normalize the hospital environment.
Recently, Zara, 7, underwent a medical imaging procedure and found tremendous support from Child Life Specialist Shreya Patel. Ameeta, Zara’s mom, shared, “We cannot overstate the level of service and communication that we experienced both before and after the procedure. It was truly exemplary. We would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Shreya Patel (Child life), who went above and beyond to ensure that we were well-prepared for the procedure. Throughout the procedure Shreya adeptly kept Zara distracted and remained fully present, making the experience remarkably easy for Zara. Her proactive approach and unwavering support made a significant difference for our family during a challenging time. Furthermore, the entire staff involved in Zara's care during the procedure demonstrated an exceptional level of professionalism and compassion.”
Zara handled the procedure with courage and to recognize her strength was presented a certificate of bravery from her care team. “We were deeply moved by the thoughtful gestures extended to Zara during her visit- from the overwhelming support, certificate of bravery and the thoughtful gift, as it was Zara’s birthday the next day,” said Ameeta. “This act of kindness brought immense joy to Zara and truly exemplified the caring and considerate nature of the Lurie Children’s and Child Life team.”
To send a personal message of gratitude, Zara filmed this short video expressing her heartfelt thanks.
Lurie Children’s has Child Life Specialists located at our main hospital and also at our outpatient satellite locations who are there to help your child understand their diagnosis or procedure in an age-appropriate way. They also help support siblings, guide families through bereavement and assist in legacy making. Lurie Ch

From amazing toys, dolls, books, games, puzzles, pajamas and more, there is something special for all ages. Thanks to the Child Life and Children’s Services teams, volunteers and Lurie Children’s generous donors, we’re able to brighten the season for our families with the holiday magic they deserve. 🎁❄️☃️🛷
You better believe when you invite Santa to your end-of-chemo bell ringing, he’s going to show up! Just in time for the holidays, Raelyn finished treatment for a brain tumor. Her family, care team and Santa were there to help celebrate. A huge Taylor Swift fan, she had ‘Shake it off’ playing as she walked the “runway” wearing a shirt that says it all, “It’s me, Hi. I’m the warrior. It’s me!” Congrats Raelyn! Lurie Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders
