Playing with water painting.

I captured this moment with the men in my life as they waited for our train to Salem and then painted it up while I was enjoying my life as a road trip passenger. ❤️

STHIRA. Steadiness, effort, steadfast, strength.

On the mat it means that every pose can have a sense of steadiness and strength in combination with ease and comfort.

Off the mat.....it is the conundrum of stairs vs. the elevator.

Every time I come to teach or take a class at .yoga
I walk through the front door and am greeted with this image. On the right are the stairs. The three flights that will lead up to the Wildlight floor. Three flights of steady steps that will circle you up to where you need to go. On the left is the hallway that leads to the elevator. The elevator that you will press the button, wait patiently for, and then step inside to be elevated to your destination without lifting a foot.

Stairs vs. Elevator.

At a glance...the stairs are the effort. The stairs are the steadfast and strength of my will and legs. They are the little 'push' I can give myself to climb to where I need to go. They are the SHTIRA.

The SUKHA is the elevator. The comfort. The ease.

But for me this week....the strong choice, the choice of effort and steadiness was to choose the elevator.

In a world that almost begs us to push and elevate, and do more so we have more....we choose the stairs. We choose the STHIRA. We choose the strenuous choice because we think that's what we should do and maybe not what we need to be doing.

This week after teaching double the classes I usually teach, I stood at this juncture and noticed how tired my legs were. I relished the hot coffee with a touch of milk that I couldn't wait to have the first sip of in my hand. I had a little argument about 'taking the stairs because one day you may not be able to' and then I made the very strong, steadfast decision.....to walk myself to the elevator. I'm not gonna lie, I argued with myself whether it was what I should have done the whole way down the hall.

Sometimes the strong decision IS the choice to find ease.

Maybe we shouldn't always assume that the most physical choice is the strongest one we will make. Maybe the effort is finding the ease. ❤️

I will never stop loving musicals. Ever.

It brings me such joy to see them and added to that joy is the fact that Joe is always down for seeing a musical AND discussing it afterwards. This second part is huge for me because I want to hear your thoughts. Was it slow? Fast? Did it make sense? What about that song in the middle? So good right?

Congrats to and the entire cast of this show. If you haven't seen it.....go!!! Bravo to an amazing show and my heart being full (even after having to wait on five blue line trains to pass because they were too full of Lolla-goers to get on) 😂

Listen. I am a killer of plants. I am. I inherited what my grandma used to call a 'purple thumb'.

I tried to grow herbs.....they grew mold and never sprouted.

I momentarily had tomato plants and then forgot to water them and watched as the squirrels mocked my decision to be an urban farmer by eating exactly one bite of the tomato and then leaving it right out my back door.

This actually happened.

As I try to navigate what's next ..where I am going ...how I am going to continue to share what I love.....I went to Canva and typed in 'wellness' to search for imagery.

What did it give me?

Plants.
Flowers.
Herbs.
Branches.

Not gonna happen.

Maybe as a 42 year old mom, instructor, writer, singer, searcher of how to just simply put good into this world I should just stick to what I know.

It's not plants.

Pizza, coffee, and laughter anyone?

We will be balancing and playing in Vinyasa/Hatha classes and continue with an Olympic theme in all Yoga Strength classes.

Baseball.
Softball.

Summers spent doing both. I grew up playing softball. It was my summer. It was my favorite part of summer. Center field was my place and I loved the view from there. I was quick and could hit a cut off from deep in center. My sister and I played on the same team usually and she usually found her place at third.

One summer we begged our parents to let us drive the 90 minutes back into town from camping so the team would have enough players to play. They allowed it and then were called a few hours later when my older sister careened into the shortstop as they both dove for a fly ball. I bet if you ask her she still would have chosen to be at the game 😉

The smell of the grass.
The ping of the bat hitting the ball.
The smiles of my kids as they make it to base.
The cheering.
A safe sign from the UMP as you still home.

Their love of a sport that Joe and I love equally as much.

It's joy on repeat over 20 years later.

This is the bag I had packed last week to go to southern Illinois.

That beauty on the top is my mouth guard.

Yep. I grind my teeth at night (and during the day when I am super stressed) so I have one. It is super glamorous.

I didn't pack this night guard. I meant to. I always mean to but then always forget it on top of the two books I apparently will never read that sit on my headboard.

I arrived home after teaching my Sunday classes and was about to zip up this very bag when I noticed the mouth guard neatly placed on top.

Joe is well aware I grind my teeth to a mortar and pestel level at night. He is also well aware that I always seem to forget it and can't sleep when I arrive at my destination.

Without a word. A text. A side 'don't forget your...' he grabbed it and just packed it for me.

It made me smile and made me feel so cared for I immediately texted him a thank you ❤️

Sometimes joy is big, over the top surprise parties and fireworks shows.

And sometimes it is the person you love remembering to pack your mouth guard for you.

UNFINISHED. It started as a sketch.  Blue whales are my favorite animal. Hands down. I wanted to paint one. Not a small one. A big one. Multiple ideas came crashing together when I saw a painting that spanned multiple canvases and was paired with geometric designs on it.

Currently this is what the whale looks like.  I added the geometric shapes just a few weeks ago A year ago it looked nothing like this. I had sketched it, painted it and added the shapes. I had tried to add a grey/purple background that came out looking like it had sunk into a bog and I had rescued it.  

So I started over. I painted all three canvas pieces white and started from scratch. I kept the pieces I loved: the diving whale image and the IDEA of geometric shapes. The second time around I got my kids involved. My middle son is very creative and can be very critical of his own work- even at age 11. He painted the middle blue section and wasn’t a fan of how many different blues he had created. My youngest son stepped back, looked at it, and said ‘but isn’t that what art is? Just different things all put together?’  My oldest son helped me add a splatter effect on top of this version.

And so it sat like that until a few weeks ago I added the geometric shapes and hung it back up.  Somewhere in my head and in the future of this painting is an effect using yarn or glitter layered on top of the shapes. Or maybe a few more paint splatters…..or maybe. The possibilities are endless.

The Whale Painting in my house watches over my dining room table and brings me so much joy. It is my favorite animal and I love to hear my boys proudly tell people how they helped me paint it. They also witness me adding to it every once in awhile and I always leave the door open for their suggestions- after all isn’t art just different things put together?

Sometimes I get so caught up int he end product that I forget to be wildly proud of where it is at right now...in this moment. This painting may never be done.

Aren't we the unfinished Whale Art? Add to it, restart it, paint over it, but never EVER hesitate to hang it and be proud of it no matter what stage it's in. ❤️🐋
