Cookie painting time !!

For our noteworthy Norwegian-American today, we’ll focus on someone a little closer to home. One of the most distinctive art styles associated with Norway and Scandinavia is the looping flowery designs of rosemaling, an art style that would have likely been forgotten if not for the efforts of Stoughton Wisconsin’s Per Lysne. He was born in eastern Norway before immigrating to Wisconsin in 1907. He had always been an artist and had started making a living painting wagons. Around the time of the great depression, Per decided he needed another source of income and revived rosemaling as a style, which had by and large faded into history in the 18th century. This proved to be so successful and popular that now rosemaling can be seen and appreciated across the United States.

I have news. Country Living Feb/March issue is calling 2024 the return of folk art. It is simplified and stylized, but… I’m getting excited it may be the beginning of the return of appreciation for the old. This is one page of three.
