Today on the blog we are taking a looking into the riso world of Rachel Delmotte. Rachel is an artist, illustrator and printmaker focusing on people’s empowerment through radical expression. Her sunny Detroit studio space is home to 3 duplicators, each named after a cowgirl from the Tom Robbin’s book, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Check out Rachel’s space and the incredible work she is creating in it via the link in our bio.
We had a great time this Saturday showing off the SF5130 duplicator. Friends who stopped by were able to make their own illustrations and run them on the flo pink drum. It was fun to see how much of the tabling artists work was RISO printed. Thanks to for having us! 🌈
In our same North Ave location since we opened our doors in 1961, this building has changed lots since then. Still there are little remnants of Hallagans through out the decades everywhere, making this little office of ours special in its own way
Today on the blog we are talking about light lime 🍋🟩 while we can’t source the flo green, this vibrant hue is a great alternative and has been growing in popularity recently. Check out more lovely light lime prints on our site (link in bio)

Meet The Hallagans. Founded in 1961 by Terry Hallagan, Hallagan Business Machines first opened as a typewriter shop on North Ave, selling everything from Smith Corona to Royal Typewriters. Terry and his wife, Kay, had 7 kids at home at the time and a dream of running their own business. Today, Hallagans is located in that same building on North Ave and run by Terry’s daughter Joan. Terry’s daughters Colleen and Laura are on our sales team, and Terry’s son Robert is our technician. Terry’s grandson Michael (also Roberts's son) is also our technician and his granddaughter Sarah runs our marketing and the corner of the office often referred to as our “shipping department.”
These days Sarah’s 4-month-old son Frankie comes and hangs out with the team too. When we say family-owned and operated, we really mean it. Hallagan Business Machines means a lot not only to the Hallagans who work here but to the entire Hallagan family. When anything major happens in our family, good or bad, and you want to check in, the office is the place to call for an update. It’s our hub in more ways than one.
Hallagans has supported our family in so many ways over the years. We want to thank all of our customers for keeping us strong. From recessions to global pandemics, and everything in between, we have made it through because of the strength of our relationships and the incredible support of our customers.
We are proud of what we do here at Hallagansa and we are proud to be a family business.
A big thank you to all of the arts educators who attended Friday’s Risograph Workshop!
Special shout out to Lauren Meranda Northeastern Illinois University Art + Design Department for doing such an amazing job leading this workshop and to Matt Davis of Perfectly Acceptable Press for being our guest speaker.
This workshop was designed to show arts educators all the ways that the risograph can be incorporated into arts curriculum. Participants were able to collage and make their own two color prints using the MH duplicator. RISO printmaking is prevalent in art departments across the country at the college level, but not so much at the high school level. It was cool to see high school arts educators brainstorming ways to work the riso into their curriculum to bring eco friendly, safe, printmaking back into their classroom
Check-in with our friend Lauren over at Northeastern Illinois University Art + Design Department to hear about how they are incorporating RISO into their curriculum. Art departments across the country are adding RISO to their art departments as a tool to educate students on color theory and printmaking!
Northeastern Illinois University and their RISO Digital Duplicators Lauren Meranda tells us about the dual-color digital duplicators, and why they're an essential part of her curriculum on printing.
New risograph workshop is live! Calling all arts educators interested in bringing riso printing to their classroom. With special guest Matt Davis from Perfectly Acceptable Press. Seating is limited, so register today!
