Thank you Farriers!
It's National Farriers Week! Let's celebrate the hard work that our farriers put in daily to partner with equine veterinarians and ensure the health and well-being of our horses. Proper hoof care is essential for a sound and happy horse, so it goes without saying that a skilled farrier is both a necessity and a tremendous asset.
Don't forget to give a shoutout to your farriers this week and show them your appreciation for their dedication to their craft!
Great information when out on the trail. This also applies to urban riding. Be safe out there
The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has many multi-use trails, meaning that hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders may all use the same trail.
Navigating narrow, steep multi-use trails can be tricky! Here's a reminder of the trail right of way:
Horses and stock animals always have the right of way. Other trail users should try to step off trail downhill and be mindful of startling passing horses. It is recommended to speak to the riders calmly, allowing the horse to recognize you as human. Keep dogs in controlled and quiet around horses.
Wheels yield to heels - Bicyclists yield to non-cyclists on trails. A biker should never ride out of control. Utilize a bike bell if you can.
Hikers yield to horses and other stock animals. However, they have the right of way when meeting bicyclists on a trail.
Hiker vs. Hiker:
Hikers going uphill have the right of way. It is up to the uphill hiker if they allow downhill users to pass as they take a breather.
Hiker vs. Hiker Groups:
Hike single-file and stay on the trail. Try not to take up more than half the trail to allow for passing. Single users should step aside, when possible, to minimize impacts when a group needs to pass.
