Happy National Pollinator Week!

National Pollinator Week is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health that was initiated and is managed by Pollinator Partnership.

This year, it is being celebrated this week, June 19-25th. It is a time to raise awareness for pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. The great thing about Pollinator Week is that you can celebrate and get involved any way you like! Popular events include planting for pollinators, hosting garden tours, participating in online bee and butterfly ID workshops, and so much more.

However, you choose to celebrate this year, be sure to register your event on the map in their website and share your story with them by tagging them on social media using the hashtag .

This Pollinator Week we will be emphasizing the connections between climate and pollinators. Pollinators are dying because their food and homes are disappearing, diseases have increased, and rising temperatures and natural disasters are affecting their ability to survive - all of which are related to climate change.

At the same time, the conservation of pollinators and their habitats can help combat climate change by supporting healthy ecosystems, air, soil, water, and plants. Combined, these results make planet earth a safer place for us to live.

These are big problems and the efforts that are made around North America and globally during Pollinator Week can help provide real solutions for the pollinators we all love.

Additional information including their official pollinator week toolkit and their regional guides for selecting plants in the US and Canada can be found at https://www.pollinator.org/pollinator-week or by contacting Pollinator Partnership at [email protected]

One of our beautiful late spring/early summer flowers is our purple-leaved penstemon. Bees and hummingbirds enjoy the pink blossoms. These plants that we are selling were propagated from self-sowed seedlings, most likely from a purple variety of Penstemon digitalis (a native cultivar).

We have absolutely fallen in love with one of our native goldenrods – the Stout Goldenrod. It is a 5-6 feet tall handsome plant that attracts tons of pollinators in September. (See the attached video.) It also is NOT highly invasive, like some goldenrods are. It will self-sow some seedlings each year, and the main plant will slowly expand over time.

In case you weren't aware, goldenrod does NOT cause allergies. It happens to bloom at the same time as the innocuous ragw**d, whose highly allergenic pollen spreads far and wide by wind. Goldenrod pollen is too heavy to blow around in the wind, and needs pollinators to spread the pollen from plant to plant. We'll have a limited number of plants available at our May sales, so arrive early if you would like to add this gorgeous plant to your own pollinator garden!

For more information about the plant varieties that we will have available, along with the dates, times and locations of our sales, check out our website: https://theladybuggarden.com

Also, on our home page, we have 6 short video clips of pollinators on our plants – including bees, butterflies, and a large hummingbird moth. We will also have an Odds & Ends section at our sales, with a limited number of some varieties not listed on our website.

If you want to attract hummingbirds to your garden, we have some awesome flowers for them – including:

* Major Wheeler honeysuckle vine (a native cultivar with hundreds of bright red blossoms all season long)
* 2 varieties of red cardinal flower (a native species and a purple-leaf cultivar)
* Red crocosmia (non-native) that hummingbirds absolutely fight over
* Eastern columbine (a native species that supports their spring migration)

Be sure to add the dates and locations of our sales to your calendar – and plan to come early, as we have limited supplies of some of our popular plants. See you soon!

Late blooming hardy sedum, October Daphne. Gorgeous pink blossoms that pollinators love. Low maintenance, drought tolerant plant. Full sun, well drained soil. Beautiful in containers. Young plants in full bloom, 2.5" containers, just $4 each.

Photos from The Ladybug Garden's post 08/29/2022

Create a gorgeous mosaic ground cover with hardy sedums! Each tray has a mixture of 32 small pots of 7-8 varieties. These sedums are a great low maintenance ground cover for sunny, well drained locations - and pollinators love their blossoms! Plant each pot about one foot apart. Trays are only $49.97 (just $1.56 per plant). Limited supply, so let us know ASAP if you want to plant these beauties in your own garden!

07/31/2022

We have fallen in love with a dwarf goldenrod called 'Little Miss Sunshine'. This plant only reaches 12-18" high, and does not spread aggressively like some goldenrods do. Our plants have already started bloomimg, and are covered with hundreds of insects!

Goldenrods are one of the top fall pollinator plants, as they support a huge number and variety of insects - and, no, this plant doesn't cause hayfever (that's often instead caused by the inconspicuous ragw**d).

07/24/2022

Want butterflies in your garden? Jeana phlox is one of the best native phloxes for attracting moths, butterflies, and an occasional hummingbird. It was the top rated phlox at the Mt Cuba Center in one of their pollinator studies. We've had as many as three swallowtails and a couple hummingbird moths on our plants at the same time.

The Jeana variety was discovered in nature. This five foot plant blooms from mid-July through early September, and is very mildew resistant.

If you'd like to support hundreds of pollinators in just a few square feet, plant some mountain mint! (But, like most mints, give it some elbow room.)

FAQ:

Who are you, and what do you sell?

The Ladybug Garden is a new small specialty plant nursery in Christiansburg, Virginia, selling perennial plants that support pollinators and other beneficial insects, with an emphasis on native plants. We don't currently offer any shrubs or trees, due to our limited space. None of our plants have been harvested from the wild. We do not sell any invasive plants listed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Do you have open hours at your nursery?

Due to zoning restrictions, our backyard nursery is not open to the public.

How can we buy your plants?

We hold spring and fall plant sales at other locations, dates and times to be announced. We also sell a few plants between sales, by bringing plants to a local meeting place with the buyers. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.

What plants do you have available?

We periodically post a list of available plants. You can also contact us directly, if you're looking for particular types of plants.

How else do you help the environment?

We also use sustainable practices in our nursery as much as possible, to reduce our carbon footprint, save wetlands, and recycle waste products.

For most of our plants, we use special fabric containers. These are made from a combination of recycled natural fibers and recycled plastic water bottles. These containers natural air prune the roots of plants to form healthy, vigorous root balls that quickly establish in the soil once planted. There is no circling of roots in the container. These containers also keep the root balls much cooler in the summer heat, and allow the roots better access to fresh oxygen.

We avoid the use of peat moss, which is removed from unique and fragile northern peat bogs and whose harvest is unsustainable.

06/20/2022

This week is National Pollinator Week! Over 75% of flowering plants world-wide require pollinators – including one in every three bites of the food that you eat. Honeybees (which are not native here) only pollinate a small portion of plants. The more than 4,000 native insect pollinators in our country do most of the work, and they are in peril due to pesticides, disease, habitat loss, and climate change.

What can you do to help?

The most important thing is to grow a variety of flowering native plants that bloom from early spring to late fall. The Ladybug Garden is a small specialty plant nursery in Christiansburg that sells pollinator plants, with an emphasis on native plants. We have a large number of pollinator plants in production for our upcoming fall sales (dates and locations to be announced).

Avoid using pesticides in your yard or garden. In addition, be sure to avoid purchasing plants that have been treated with systemic pesticides, such as neonicotinoids, which can kill bees and other beneficial insects. The Ladybug Garden does not use these chemicals, and avoids purchasing any young plants that have been treated with these.

Pollinators also need nesting sites – so be sure to leave the leaves in the fall. Don't rake them all up, as pollinators often hibernate underneath them. It's also helpful to let plant stems stand through the winter until daytime spring temps consistently remain above 50 F, as pollinators often overwinter inside the stalks and need time to safely emerge.
