Enjoy these posts and join us Sunday mornings as we continue discussions based on this book!

On Fridays during the season of Epiphany, we will be exploring Eucharistic Practices using “Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs & Practices” by the Rev’d Scott Gunn, executive director of “Forward Movement,” and the Rev’d Melody Shobe, associate priest for children and families at Church of the Good Shepherd in Dallas, as our source.

The first part of the service consists of gathering in the Lord’s name. It usually starts with a procession of the worship servers including the priest to the altar where a response between priest and people is then said. The response varies by season. For example, during Lent, the priest will say “Bless the Lord who forgives all sins.” We respond with “His mercy endures forever.” After this, the priest may say the Collect for Purity found in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) on page 355.

Next comes the first of many hymns – spoken or sung – throughout the service. During Advent and Lent, the Kyrie may be sung. At other times, the Gloria is sung (“Glory to God in the highest” BCP, p. 356).

This is followed by the Collect of the Day. A collect is another word for prayer. The Collect of the Day “gathers the themes of the readings and points us toward our celebration of Christ’s incarnation and how it can bear fruit in our lives.” (Walk in Love, p. 57)
