Unchecked mean girls, racism, sexism, cronyism… call it what you want. It all spells disaster for organizations of today. I’ve seen it at its worst. 🙅♀️
These “isms” noted above cause jealousy between employees and pretty soon rumors start when one of us is promoted. It wreaks. Younger employees can’t break it down but they know it just doesn’t feel right. They quit. 🤘
The bandaid for all this is humor. It was a coping mechanism at my last company but those laughs were toxically varnished, fake, and insincere. Laughter without love is evil. It just is. Hyenas could have done it better. 🌚
But I saw them… and I had empathy for them. I couldn’t fix them but I could listen when they wanted to come into my office to vent. And that they did!
These were just human beings with kids and busy schedules, marriages that were on the brink of divorce, and literally houses to build in their personal life. 🪐⚡️
Any idiot (or mediocre consultant) could have seen that everyone in leadership was just exasperated from constant work, mad customers, inept new hires, overworked managers who reported to them, broken equipment, complaining investors, floods, fires, murders, and maintenance men who couldn’t speak English and were breaking safety rules… the list goes on and on. And the angry unorganized chaos modality trickled down to everyone.
My company got these 3 Epic but Common things wrong. Does this sound familiar?
1) The CEO was too proud to ask for help. - / afraid of the future /
2) Leadership agreed that they could just keep doing fundamental things the way they had always done them… and everything would work out eventually. - / yearning for the past /
3)Work is supposed to be hard.
- / stuck in the present /
Then COVID hit and things got much, much worse. It was an epic train wreck. Holy peanut butter sandwiches, Batman, I couldn’t believe the symptoms of horrible workplace culture that I was witnessing!🌝
Due to my role in marketing, (specifically reputation management), my customers were uniquely internal. That meant that anyone could ask me for anything at any time. I was the creative one, the technically astute one, the empathetic one… You know, that one person in the organization who knows enough to at least point you in the right direction if they don’t have the solution? That was me.
From my vantage point, especially during and after the pandemic, I saw and heard toxic grossness from everyone. No one liked anyone. Everyone was talking behind everyone else’s backs. No one was happy. Almost everyone was looking for a new job.
🌪️🔥She should have just sold the company like I told her because they weren’t even profitable. Madness for debt. Its nuts. ☄️
I know that I spent about four hours a week looking for a better job but I couldn’t find one that paid more, so I stayed FOR SIX YEARS. Mistake. 👎🚫 I should have taken a job that paid less where I could be valued as a human woman, but I stayed way too long. That job nearly killed me.
It killed at least one of my colleagues. He was a loner. He was talented but work was all he had. And we clearly didn’t have him. 😢😔
The high-level executives never got a break. They were spent. I was there to help as a marketing director but there is only so much I could do to help. I learned the hard way that you can’t advertise yourself out of the toxic symptoms of attrition. Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apartments.com, and Glassdoor make sure of that.
In many companies the politics and over burden of tasks exhaust leadership and the rewards are too little. The women and minority employees do most of the work and get less pay, fewer opportunities. Dismal. Fried.
🧜♀️🌊This is me drawing a line in the sand:__________________
Okay enough of that nasty stuff! 🥰I’m here to HELP! My middle name is “Joy.” 🧜♀️Seriously! It’s the job I was made to do. 🧜♂️ Facilitate, communicate, and spread JOY (and hope) into the place I have spent the most of my days, at work. 🛠️Since I was 15 I’ve been working. That's 35 years in case you’re counting🕰️.
I’ve had 24 different employers, contributed to eight industries, and worked in four states. Does that make me a job hopper? Maybe. It’s just my life 🦄🦋and because of this tremendous journey, I have also learned so much. 🙉🙈🐵🙊
You knew that I was also a journalist too. 🖌️Right? All that means in this context is I know how to ask the right questions to find out what makes a place or a person tick. I’m empathetic. A good listener. It’s my superpower: helping people at work! 📚
I know there is a better way (because I’ve lived it at least once - TY USAF✈️🇺🇸) and it starts by forming genuine relationships with your colleagues and your customers. And THAT feels so good. 🧬
Then, ASAP you can build relationships with others in the community and Give Back!
But, this transformation only works when everyone in the whole company is on the same page.
You and your colleagues have to be coached like any successful team. Have you ever known a team to play well without a coach? ⛓️💥Nope. Me neither.
Here is the the bottom line TED LASSO style: in order to create a team you must start by employing a substitute coach. Everyone on the team needs to be empowered, feel confident and valued, and know their position so that everyone can go forward and be more competitive.
That’s what we do at SJM Consulting Services!/// = TEAM STRATEGY!! NO COACH = NO TEAM. (The active consulting journey for any organization ends when your Coach/Chief People Officer, ie.: prior recruiter) is ready to fly!) In this way, you don’t have to recruit anymore and you can start attracting the very best employees to your HR department. 🎤💧
A company is just a group of people banging off one another.
But…
An organization has team members, team goals, team success!
See the difference?
No cliques. No nastiness. No competition. Just kind and sincere, genuine people rooting for one another as a team. Diverse and inspired men and women leaning on one another (professionally of course) honoring one another’s specific strengths and filling in for one another’s weaknesses.
You know it as well as I do; men and women, different folks who don’t look like or move like us… all compliment one another at an organization like this. But how to bust down those cultural barriers?⁉️🙋♀️
Perhaps a consulting firm with over a dozen of the most qualified humans on the planet can show you how? Yes!!! This is an ad for my company, SJM Consulting Services. We got you!
Here’s what’s up:
I’m in Italy until the middle of August, thoroughly enjoying my life but when I get back, it’s on like Donkey Kong! Book a time with me and my team. We can help. I promise.
Our firm’s focus is on US organizations in any industry with about 50+employees or MORE.
….If you’ve read this far, thank you. I know this is long, but it’s important.
If you’re a CEO please know that your employees are not going to come to you because they’re afraid of losing their job. This has to be done through a third-party. But hiring my team is going to be the best investment you’ve ever made. I guarantee it!
If you happen to work for corporate America and have a good relationship with your CEO, show them this post! You’re going to be the hero and really… what do you have to lose?
We offer money-back guarantee on all our services. 💥Really!

Stephen Hawking's observation that "smart people look crazy to dumb people" highlights a common challenge faced by innovative thinkers. Genius often pushes boundaries and challenges conventional wisdom, which can be disorienting or even threatening to those who are less informed or resistant to change. This disparity can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations of groundbreaking ideas. Hawking's remark underscores the importance of embracing diverse perspectives and recognizing that unconventional thinking can be a sign of profound insight rather than madness. It's a reminder to remain open-minded and curious, valuing the contributions of those who think differently.
Neil deGrasse Tyson often suggests that if aliens exist and have the capability to visit Earth, they are likely so advanced that we would be insignificant or uninteresting to them. He argues that human concerns might not be relevant to such advanced beings. Tyson also speculates that we might not even recognize their presence if they are vastly different from us, both in form and communication. He emphasizes the importance of humility, noting that while we search for extraterrestrial life, we must also be prepared to discover that we are not the center of the universe.

On this week's edition of The SQV Conversation, we welcome Miran Gunnells, the founder of Real Fathers Inc, putting single fathers first.
Your past is as important as where you are going, and for Miran who was raised by a single mom, he learned early on what a difference a present father can make in the life of young children. Tragically, Miran became a single dad when his daughters mom passed away when they were only ten and seven.🥹
Miran had to become his young daughters' everything, and he rose to the occasion. 💪🏾Miran tells the whole story in this evocative interview with Shannon Joy Mekeel. Watch until the end because Miran has some good questions for Shannon too about her career and the challenges she faced as a young mom in the early 2000's.
Single fathers often face unique challenges, including balancing work and childcare, dealing with societal stereotypes, and navigating legal systems for custody and support. Now that his daughters are grown and have successful careers, Miran and his team are giving back to other single dads in BIG ways. 💙
