An Internal Medical Physician from Bend, Oregon was the solo champion at the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim, finishing the grueling 24 mile course in 10 hours, 9 minutes. Dr. Jamie Proffitt, 53, was able to take an early lead as they swam toward the sunrise over Tampa Bay. The event was originally scheduled for the previous day, but was changed to Easter Sunday due to high winds and waves. The winds calmed overnight, so the 7 solo swimmers and 2 relay teams were met with calm conditions when the race started at 7:03am. For most of the day, the 5-7mph wind from the NW created a slight chop as they swam northward along the St. Petersburg shoreline. As they approached the monster spans across Tampa Bay, the Gandy and the Howard Frankland, winds had increased to 12-15mph and created a moderate chop of 1-2 feet.

A six-person relay team named, "Who Let The Dawgs Out" won the relay category, finishing the course six minutes faster than the solo champion. Their time of 10 hours, 3 minutes brought them the finish line first, reaching the Finish Line at Ben T. Davis Beach at 5:06pm. Their team consisted of a group of alumni who swam together on the varsity team at Truman State University. A member of St. Pete Masters swim team, Christie Bruner, organized college team mates' entry as they traveled to Florida from Iowa and Texas.

Qing Li, 29, Chicago, IL was the first woman to complete the course, finishing in 12 hours, 3 minutes.

The field included swimmers from across the United States, and even included entries Costa Rica and Poland.

Since the 24 Mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim was first staged in 1998, it has drawn competitors from across the United States, from Great Britain, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Japan, Switzerland, The Bailiwick of Jersey, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica and Poland. The race is one of the world's longest marathon swims and held annually in April, in celebration of Earth Day.

This 24 mile ultra-distance marathon swim race starts at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and ends on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa in a race that covers the entire length of Tampa Bay. The event is held each year to celebrate Earth Day and the revitalization of Florida's largest estuary. It is one of the world's longest marathon swimming races, and is a part of the Grand Slam of Open Water Marathon Swimming, which also includes The English Channel, Manhattan Island, and the Catalina Island marathon swims.

The next Tampa Bay Marathon Swim will be on Saturday, April 20, 2019. This 24 mile ultra-distance marathon swim race starts at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and ends on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa in a race that covers the entire length of Tampa Bay. Swimming on a calm day, going the length of Tampa Bay in less than 10 hours is an amazing feat. At last year's Tampa Bay Marathon Swim a 50-year-old woman, Karen Zemlin from Plymouth, Minnesota was able to battle choppy waves and a 15 knot wind to win the event in an incredible 9 hours, 55 minutes. Water Temperature was a very comfortable 75F/24C, but the easterly winds measured 15 knots for the start at 7:08am. The swimmers fought through a moderate chop of 1 to 2 feet until noontime. The winds fell to about 8 knots in the afternoon so the waves were less daunting by the time they reached the Gandy Bridge. The late-afternoon seabreeze stirred winds and caused isolated thunderstorms as the last swimmer reached the finish at 7:36pm.
