The Montessori method is based on the scientific method...

Upper Elementary students in their final year plan a big trip. This year, they planned a trip to New York City. The students planned all of the trip logistics with support from their Guides. Margaret Brainard, Allison Fishburne, and Jessica Hatfield talked with the students about how to navigate situations they may encounter in a new, big city. They gave the students insights into cultural differences and pedestrian expectations and how to work through obstacles.

"Our student-directed production of Romeo and Juliet was truly a community effort. Students used an edited script we found online as a springboard to explore the language and add back their favorite lines and monologues. They built a frame for our borrowed lighting equipment (thank you, Spirit Gum Theatre Company), created a set of found materials, selected costumes from The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem's shop, practiced lighting and sound cues, created a printed poster and program, and organized props backstage. Everyone learned a lot about the hard work and sustained effort of putting on a play and enjoyed the supportive responses of Upper Elementary students, WSM administrators, and their families and friends!" an excerpt from the Adolescent Program (ages 12 to 15) monthly newsletter. Special thanks to Lara Ianni, who trained students in stage combat sword fighting! During her practice, a student said, "This is truly a dream come true!" We appreciate you!

Positive Discipline - The Brain & Emotional Regulation
"When I saw Positive Discipline as the class title, I hesitated because I associate discipline with punishment. But now that I took this class, I realize Positive Discipline is about teaching your child emotional intelligence and regulation skills, which are so valuable throughout all aspects of life," said a guest during our Coffee Talk: Positive Discipline led by Certified Positive Discipline instructor and Director of Toddler and Children's House Programs Holly Tosco. Stay tuned for an upcoming Positive Discipline class with Winston-Salem Montessori School!

One last look at 2023. Thank you for spending 2023 with the Winston-Salem Montessori School community!

Staci Jackson, WSM Learning Specialist, hosted a Reading Journey Class Series for adults with children. She spoke on how WSM teaches reading and how families can support that work at home. Intentional conversations on a topic your child enjoys can enhance their oral language, expand their vocabulary, and enhance their reading and writing development.

Once a year, Winston-Salem Montessori School hosts an Elementary Montessori Journey. WSM families and the public are invited to see the world through the eyes of an Elementary student, and it is magical!

Pesto Pasta! Upper Elementary Students and Lower Elementary Students (ages 6 - 12 years old) harvested basil from their class garden and made pesto pasta. At Winston-Salem Montessori School, we provide students with lessons that are an aid to life. From Toddler through Adolescence, students develop lifelong skills as they grow their own food, harvest, and cook meals. UE and LE students served the pasta to their class. Afterward, the students said, "We want to give pasta to the adults, too." They traveled from class to class, office to office, and delivered pasta as an extra thoughtful touch. Come tour the campus during the WSM Open House on Sunday, November 5th, 2023, 2:00pm - 4:00pm. RSVP link in bio.

We enjoy connecting with WSM families during conference days! During every school day, Montessori Guides observe each student and keep records on what topics they are drawn towards, how they are progressing, and more. Conference Day is a special day where the Guides share their observations with the families. It takes a village to raise a child and we are grateful to be a part of your village!

Children's House Montessori Journey! Caregivers entered the point of view of a Children's House student. Adults chose a station and interacted with the materials. Guides gave lessons on how the Montessori materials aid children towards their educational milestones. Guests said, "I wish I learned math this way!" and "What age do they start learning that lesson? I did not learn that until I was much older!" As a group, we shared a deep appreciation towards a Montessori education. Thank you for sharing this joy with us!

During our public education series, Aid to Life, WSM Program Directors Cheryl Raymond and Holly Tosco spoke about integrating the Montessori philosophy into your home. They opened the class by busting a Montessori myth and explaining how to true intention behind the prepared environment is to support your child's development and ability to develop independence.

Congratulations to WSM Adolescent Program student Bodie Anderson on his newsworthy book report! Thank for the feature The Triad CW WXII 12 NEWS! The Montessori approach to education empowers students to think outside of the box. By providing freedom to students, we are astounded with how they exceed our expectations! It's been a delight to see Bodie's creativity grow. Congratulations Bodie!

The Winston-Salem Montessori School Adolescent Program is for the middle school years, ages 12-15 years old. Our students have been studying waste in its varying forms. They studied bioplastics, island waste, various ways to compost, how law, industry and consumerism affects our environmental sustainability and more! During their Waste Fair, they presented their research to the students of Upper Elementary and the Administrative team. We are so proud of our AP students! DM us to schedule a tour!

Students from LE1, are studying Louis Armstrong. They found and printed the lyrics to What a Wonderful World. They brought the lyrics to Ms. Holly and asked her to help them sing it. Today beautiful music filled our halls thanks to Ms. Holly and our Guides, Ms. Shama and Ms. Olivia, and the students who feel empowered to freely explore their interests. What a wonderful world. 🌎❤️
