For almost 38 years, I've been doing radio at WRUW-FM 91.1. This is my favorite time of year ... our annual "Telethon" Fundraiser. The September 11, 2022 edition of Sunday Matinee features the story and music of "Come from Away". This musical that tells the true story of what happened in Gander, Newfoundland, when 38 planes were ordered to land in Gander because of the terrorist attacks in the United States on 9/11/2001. Just read the news that Olivia Newton John has passed away at age 73. 😢 Like a lot of people, I loved her in Grease, and I was a fan of her in the 80s (I still have my vinyl copy of Physical). I wasn't a big fan of the film Xanadu, but I love this scene where Gene Kelly and Olivia dance together in his final film role. RIP Olivia! https://youtu.be/pp1qNDgrK4w

Some are pretty easy, some are a little more challenging. These are not in chronological order, because many have been in and out of production for decades. I can tell you that 5 of these musicals are adapted or inspired by books, 1 is adapted from a movie, 1 is adapted from a comic strip, and 5 were created originally for the stage. Have fun! :)

Update on returning to regular broadcasts of "Sunday Matinee":
1) WRUW is still on automation, but I have selected musicals to play on Sundays from 12p-2p, so you can still hear the music you love at our usual time. Tune in to 91.1 FM in NEOhio, or listen online at wruw.org!
2) We have also incorporated showtunes into the main automation, and you can hear a musical block every weekday from 12noon-1pm, too!
3) In the meantime I am working on putting together pre-recorded shows for you! Stay tuned for details!

Normally, at this time, I would be at WRUW-FM 91.1 Cleveland to host my Sunday Matinee Radio Show but today I'm sitting at home with a cat on my lap. The difference today is that WRUW is now on 24/7 automation because of the health emergency. It was a tough decision by the station executive staff, but we have 60+ people at the station every week using a lot of shared equipment. That's a situation that is ripe for potential problems, even with an abundance of Lysol wipes, gloves, and sanitizers. In addition, we're a University-based station, all of the students have been sent home for the rest of the semester, and the University has put a kabash on non-essential people getting into buildings on campus. We're working on ways to broadcast pre-recorded shows, so please bear with us! In the meantime, enjoy the variety of music in rotation. :)
