For years, self practice was 99% of my yoga practice. It helped me build a really special relationship to yoga since it was so self-guided and exploratory, and to this day I will choose self practice over a class 90% of the time. . But between moving and wrapping up another school year, I’ve needed the accountability of teacher led classes. It’s been so nice to practice (via zoom or in person) with other teachers lately. . Last night I let myself step onto the mat “for just a minute” since I needed to mow and empty the dishwasher and put away painting supplies and and and.... and of course it was well over a few minutes later that I stepped back off of the mat. Just some kitty-filled, playful morning movement. . I never plan out my self practice and I never practice for a set time. Instead I try to show up feeling curious and also interested in moving through (more or less) each range of motion for my arms and legs. . Sometimes that means I’m on the mat for 20 minutes, sometimes it means 2 hours. It has officially been one month of daily handstand drills and practice. And while things don’t look much different from the outside, they sure feel different internally. . My wrists no longer ache during / after practice; arm balances that usually feel shaky feel steady; even though I cannot *really* handstand, I feel at least knowledgeable enough to know how to one day get there. . Flipping your grip // . IG has popularized flipped grip poses, but 1) how do you enter safely? And 2) what does it mean when a person enters active-passively vs actively? . The first flipped grip I enter into using a bind, which is an active-passive form of flexibility. This makes it more accessible since contact creates the ability to tug and give, but it also means that a person could force it before their body is ready. The second entrance is entirely active, meaning that it’s harder to get into (takes more strength and flexibility as well as more awareness — note I totally don’t find my foot on the second side 😂), but it is also safer (unless your body is ready, you ain’t getting there via this method! . Ultimately, most of us start flipping our grips using the first method, but remember to listen closely to your body. This is what overcoming fear looks like. . Not pictured: the hours (and months and YEARS) of practice that it took for me to feel comfortable and confident in attempting a dropback. . A couple years ago I did one for the first time, but it didn’t feel good in my body. In fact, I could hardly breathe while getting into it, and I worried about the impact on my wrists and shoulders. . Doing a dropback now feels controlled. I can breathe fully the whole way through and I know where my hands will land and that they won’t slide back. . But for literal YEARS I put off trying it again. I worked my active backbends and shoulder strength and mobility and continued to check in, but never pushed myself to try it until I thought, “I can do this, so why not?” . That’s been a big part of yoga for me: not caring about anyone else’s journey or progression or timeline — just listening to my body with openness and curiosity. . And in doing this dropback, and I felt pride.
