In our final Black History Month highlight, we would like to honor our 8th International President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Soror Violette N. Anderson, who became the first African American woman to practice law before the United States Supreme Court.

Soror Anderson graduated from Chicago Law School in 1920. She was the only woman in her class and the first woman in Illinois to graduate from law school. After graduation, Soror Anderson opened a private practice and became the first black female lawyer in the U.S. District Court Eastern Division. She was the first African American and woman appointed as an assistant prosecutor in Chicago, and on January 29th, 1926, she became the first black woman to be admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. She was one of the most prominent advocates of a landmark piece of legislation that helped secure rights and economic mobility for sharecroppers in the south, The Bankhead-Jones Act.

Before she died, she bequeathed her cottage, Birch Haven, in Idlewild to the sorority. Soror Violette N. Anderson was a trailblazer, and her work is a continuing inspiration almost a century later. Thank you, Soror Anderson for leading the way to change and representing Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc to the highest degree!💙🤍

On this Undergraduate Day of Service, Pi Omicron spent their Saturday Morning at the Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity ReStore, where they helped organize and sort items donated from the community!💙🤍🕊️
