Rainbow Reflections
Fall colors always bring out the best reflections! The symphony of reds, yellow and greens in these little aspen trees are just fantastic. And here, we get two for the price of one! Capturing great reflections is always a delicate balance of wind, light and sheer patience. One little gust and the entire mirror turns to fog. Fortunately, Mother Nature was on our side on this fine Colorado day.

Welcome to Ashcroft! One of Colorado's many ghost towns, this delightful little village was once a booming mining operation. Established in the 1800s, Ashcroft, like many towns in the wild west, was part of the pioneers' pilgrimage across America. Prospectors came in search of gold and silver. Today, photographers come in search of a different kind of gold. . . One that can only be found on the brilliant aspen forests during fall colors.

Bixby Bridge Sunset | Monterey California
I wonder if the engineer who designed this structure ever imagined that it would become such a cherished national landmark? Situated on the rugged California coast, Bixby Bridge celebrates the combination of architecture and the natural world. At sunset, the bridge glows with a soft yellow hue that matches the shimmering horizon, golden beaches and rolling hills.

Island Lake | Colorado USA
After a punishing hike, the elusive Island Lake finally comes into view. Emerald and sapphire emanate from the water as a beautiful morning unfolds to meet the day. Always be careful with that polarizer! You donโt want to eliminate the sky reflections in the water!

Rainbow Cabbage - Monterey California
Real beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Not every nature image comes in the form of an epic vista. These little succulents were growing right in the hotel parking lot! Beauty is all around. . . sometimes you just have to look down.

Arches National Park - Utah
Welcome to the American Southwest! Arches National Park is home to the largest concentration of naturally occurring rock arches on Planet Earth. This image was captured from 500 meters away using a 300mm lens. The telephoto effect helps to compress the red rock towers and the snow capped mountains in the distance into a pleasing composition.

Golden Highways | Colorado
Normally Iโm not a fan of roads running through my landscape scenes. Landscapes are meant to be pure nature, primitive and unscathed by the likes of us dirty humans (weโre always meddling in places we donโt belong). But, then again, the โNo Road Sceneโ is a pretty cynical perspective when you think about it. Roads are a great way to get in touch with the great outdoors. And once the electric cars finally take over, we can zip into the wilderness guilt-free, without billowing toxic hydrocarbons into the fresh clean air. So go buy a new car you global warming pyromaniac!

Ice Lake Basin Sunbeams | Colorado
โTurn around! Youโre missing the best part!โ
Quite often we have our sites set on something we think is going to be great, only to turn around and find an epic sunrise lighting up the sky in the opposite direction. Good rule of thumb for landscape photography: always look behind you! The best light might just be in the rear view.

Autumn Roads | Telluride, Colorado
One of these days we will stop digging for gold. Itโs only a matter of time before we realize that the real gold is right out in the open. And best of all, itโs totally free! Why spend all day in the dirt when you can have a view like this? Okay, humans will always obsess over the shiny things we pull out of the ground, but I prefer to keep my eyes on the horizon. Mother Nature will even throw in a splash of emerald and sapphire if youโre lucky. Blend all the amazing colors of autumn together, and you have yourself a true Colorado treasure chest.

Forever Violet
The great American West is well know for its vast populations of wild flowers. Coming in all shapes and sizes, these little gems represent how truly diverse Mother Nature's paint pallet can be. Living beneath the immortal towers of the Grand Teton, this little patch of Blue Bonnets caught my eye with their striking showcase of colors.
In the wild, this species scarcely grows much beyond the size of a milk carton, which is why I was completely awestruck to find this colossal patch of plumage towering up to my shoulders! What an amazing discovery! These Godzilla-sized flowers were obviously benefitting from some long-forgotten irrigation channel left by one of the many historic farms in the area. Healthy, happy, and practically consuming the old split-rail fence, these lupines made the perfect photographic composition.
High winds kept me from shooting this location on the evening of their discovery. Vowing to return first thing in the morning, I slept on pins and needles as the winds thrashed like a hurricane all night. What if my perfect patch of flowers was destroyed when I returned? What if the opportunity was lost forever? Much to my delight, the flowers were unharmed the next day. A serene calm lay over the landscape. The perfect calm was interrupted by the sound of the shutter, and Forever Violet was born.

Tahquamenon Falls - Michigan Upper Peninsula
I would consider Michigan to be the unsung hero of American fall colors. We always talk about New England, the Carolinas and the Smokey Mountains. And while these locations are certainly legendary, Michigan proved itself time and again through the lens during our last trip. Seen here, Tahquamenon Falls rumbles like a giant chocolate fountain in the eastern region of the Upper Peninsula. This image was captured from one of the many upper vantage points which overlook the river.
Perhaps most notable: this photograph is 100% wheelchair accessible. A nice, flat, paved path leads right up to the overlook where this image was captured. No disability should ever stop you from experiencing the amazing places that our nation has to offer! And as a bonus, everyone is Michigan is super, super. . . super nice.

Red Maple Michigan Upper Peninsula
Welcome to maple tree madness! Iโm pretty sure every single color on the fall spectrum is represented in this single tree. Believe it or not, these fiery branches actually span a parking lot in Michiganโs Upper Peninsula. It just goes to show that you donโt always have to trek deep into the forest to discover natureโs little gems. The telephoto lens comes in very handy whenever you need to reach out and take a little compositional slice out of life.
Believe it or not, fall colors will be here before you know it! Visit us at Premium Light Academy to brush up on your landscape skills before hitting the trails this autumn.
