The M.Ed.
in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program at University of South Carolina is designed to prepare entry level and mid-level professionals for successful administrative careers in a variety of postsecondary education contexts.

HESA Student of the Year is based on academic performance and effort in coursework, including overall GPA. We also consider contributions to the field of higher education and student affairs (i.e. presentation at conference) and/or application of course material to the field (i.e. internship or practicum).

Education professor, researcher believes in the value of mentoring Despite growing up the son of a special education teacher, Jamil D. Johnson did not set his sights on being a teacher himself until he was well into his undergraduate education as a history major at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

UofSC alumna selected to lead Title IX efforts Following a national search, Molly Peirano, a University of South Carolina alumna who recently led Title IX engagement and education efforts at Ohio State University, will assume the newly created position of Assistant Vice President for Civil Rights and Title IX at South Carolina.

We are excited to launch a new HESA Speaker Series! Dr. Cindy Ann Kilgo (UofSC HESA c/o 2012) will be our virtual keynote on Monday, November 8, 2:30-4 pm Eastern. In this keynote, Dr. Kilgo will share highlights from their book, Supporting Success for LGBTQ+ Students: Tools for Inclusive Campus Practice, which was released in October 2020 by The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Attendees of the keynote will be entered in a raffle to win a copy of Dr. Kilgo’s book, which are generously donated by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Staff Spotlight: Raechel Blakeney was recognized in the College of Education's Advisor Spotlight publication for providing excellent service to students, faculty and staff with a positive attitude. She said, "I love having the opportunity to help my students and colleagues every day. To be a resource to people, helping them find their passion, and making sure they know their options is a great joy to me." Regarding the value of she shares, "Working at a PWI can be hard, especially during times of significant political and civil unrest, but being connected to people who look like me and have similar experiences in the world and the field of education makes me feel like I’m not alone in my experiences."
