Common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) are unique among North America’s native aquatic turtles.
“Unique?” You ask. “They’re everywhere!” This is also somewhat true. They are not very much like the other aquatic turtles native to North America. As their name implies however, these turtles are commonly found, and the species range is large.

Common snapping turtles are naturally found throughout most of the United States, from the eastern edges of the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic coast, and their range also includes much of southern Canada. The species is known to naturally occur in freshwater habitats including shallow ponds and streams, and they have even been known to utilize brackish estuaries. The turtles are omnivorous, feeding on much more plant material than most would expect. They are also important aquatic scavengers, and may hunt aquatic invertebrates, fish, frogs, reptiles, some birds, and small mammals. Tales of their predation on ducklings and goslings are often wildly inflated.

Snapping turtle eggs are frequently eaten by crows, minks, skunks, foxes, and raccoons. As hatchlings and juveniles, the turtles are still vulnerable to predation by these animals, as well as to wading birds such as herons, birds of prey such as hawks and owls, fishers, bullfrogs, large fish, and even snakes. As adults, snapping turtles may be preyed upon by coyotes, bears, and alligators. Very frequently, they are killed on roads, or even directly persecuted by humans.

The unique anatomy of these turtles means that special care must be taken to safely move them. Their long necks are especially flexible, and their reduced plastron gives their strong legs a large range of motion. Should you find yourself in a position where you need to move one of these turtles, off of a road, or to safety in some way, you must ensure that both you and the turtle stay safe from harm. The internet is replete with photos of how to carry these turtles incorrectly. Please see below for important tips on moving these majestic reptiles.

DO NOT carry these turtles by their tail!
DO NOT move the turtle to another location! Move it in the direction it was going as safely as possible.

Correct ways to carry, or move a snapping turtle:
• Grip the carapace (top shell) over its hind legs, as shown.
• If lifted and carried, carry the turtle low to the ground to avoid injury to the turtle if dropped.
• If not carried, the turtle can still be moved with a mat, or a snow shovel.
• ALWAYS carefully observe traffic safety and act accordingly!
