Turkish Tea: Customs and Traditions
Having heard a lot about Turkish coffee, I assumed coffee to be the national drink of Turkey. Being unfamiliar with the country of Turkey until a few months ago, I was surprised to discover this assumption is totally wrong. Turkish people love drinking tea. From sunrise to sunset, there is never a bad time to drink tea in Turkey. It is consumed all day long, starting with breakfast and continuing until bedtime. The practice is firmly ingrained in the culture as a social experience, a gesture of friendship, and a sign of hospitality. Turks even beat the British in the daily consumption of tea.
Turkish Tea Thrives in Lockdown
For a lot of Turkish people, life would be empty without the coffeehouse. In a country of 82 million people, coffeehouses function more as social clubs than mere places to sip a hot beverage. It’s where Turkish people have gathered for centuries to discuss business, politics, and the latest brewing trends.
Turkish Tea Cup
I did a bit more digging and found the Armudu. The Armudu is one and the same as a Turkish teacup. Finding information about the Turkish teacup is difficult. The Armudu is from Azerbaijan, and the Belli bardak is the specific name of the Turkish teacup. Both are similar to each other, just from different regions. Azerbaijan is in the UK at a crossroads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Caspian Sea is to the east, Russia is to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.
It is difficult to imagine Turkey and Turkish hospitality without its hot mahogany coloured black tea, with a hint of dried bergamot. Tea drinking is an integral part of the fabric of society in Turkey and all kinds of events, celebrations and even funerals. Turkish tea is wrapped up in traditions tied in with Turkish society’s hospitality. There’s a famous folk saying from Sivas that captures the importance of tea in Turkish society (from the Turkish Cultural Foundation):

A nation of many contrasts, Turkey displays a fascinating history and a unique cultural heritage that reflects its geographical location at the very intersection of east and west. In fact, the nation’s former capital, Istanbul, is bisected by the Bosphorus Strait. This waterway delineates the boundary that separates the city, placing half of Istanbul in Europe and the other half in Asia.

Hello guys, today we will tell you the indispensable tea of the Turks. Tea is an indispensable beverage that is consumed at least 3-4 times during the day. There is always tea at the table for breakfast.
Tea is big in Turkey. A great deal of the population admires this drink. When asked to describe a hot summer day, a cold winter day, a visit to family or friends, a quick way to relax and especially a full breakfast, tea will be part of it. People often associate Turkish tea with apple tea, but that’s just a touristic thing.
The tea was first carried by Silk Road traders to present-day Turkey during 5th century, who used it in barter trade for Chinese produce. By the end of 6th century, drinking tea had become popular, and was no longer considered just a medicinal drink.
Tea is a popular drink throughout Turkey and the Turkish diaspora. Turkey has the highest per capita tea consumption in the world with an annual total consumption of close to 7 pounds per person.
