When Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac He had to come to the place that he would give everything to God, even that which was promised to him by God himself.
When the rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life Jesus went through some of the commandments and he told Jesus he had kept them since he was young. The problem the rich young ruler had was not that he wasn't religious enough, it wasn't that he didn't have enough theology. He obviously believed in Jesus as the Messiah because he came to ask him what he lacked to have eternal life. He knew he lacked something.
He knew something was wrong even though he had kept all the things Jesus mentioned. I am assuming this because Jesus didn't correct him saying, "no you have not kept this one or that one" instead Jesus told him. one thing you lack. Go sell all you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven and come follow me.
The rich young ruler went away sad because he had great possessions.
This morning I have been thinking about the things I possess. Do I want to be like the rich young ruler and hold on to the things I have? My answer is no. NO I do not. That is what my soul cries out to the Lord. "Lord take it all". You can have it all. I don't want to hold anything back from you. In Practice however, My flesh has a different answer. My Flesh things about the meager Possessions I have and thinks, "I do not want to give that up." I don't want to give my cell phone up. I don't want to give my Church up even though I believe it is something God has blessed me with like Isaac was Abraham's blessing and promise from God. The List goes on. Tools, Cars etc...
As I sit here and type this out thinking about all my things I own. they are nothing. I told the Lord he can take them all. He is my reward. He is my inheritance. The father is mine, Jesus is mine, the Holy Spirit is mine. Salvation is mine. relationship with them is mine. nothing else matters. Lord you can have it all. That is what the spirit man inside me says. That is what my soul longs for. Just like the line in the song says Take this world and give me Jesus.
It must be what Paul meant when he said he counted it as loss and he counted it as dung.
(Philippians 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,)
So it is my heart's cry this morning that the Lord can take whatever he wants out of my life. However I realize that my flesh nature screams, "No that is mine". Nothing truly is mine. I am only an overseer of the things God has entrusted me with. Understanding this it is my greatest desire that the flesh does not stand in the way should the Lord require me to get rid of anything in this life that he says I must let go of. It is my prayer that I can maintain this willingness to let go of anything and everything he wants me to let go of, whether that be stuff or people in my life.
It is easy to think I could give this up or that up while I am sitting here typing on my computer. However, in practice it could be much harder.
We must come to the place that Abraham did, willing to sacrifice that which meant the most to him.
We must be like the apostle Paul, all things are loss, all things are as dung to us that we may have Christ Because if we are like the rich young ruler we will go our way in life with much sorrow not wanting to give up our possessions to have fullness with God. We will never truly enter into the fullness of the blessings God has for our lives.

1st Corinthians 2:9-16
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
