MORAL INJURY COURSE
USA-IRL Graduate School, School for Spiritual Care and CPE, provided the Medical Ministry Moral Injury (MMMI) course 15-19 July 2024.
The course included 23 students from throughout the US Army, two National Guardsmen, four USMA Cadets, and one USMA Professor. It consisted of four days of in-class learning and a day of staff ride to Charleston, SC.
The course offered training in distinguishing moral injury from spiritual injury, PTSD, and trauma, to develop effective ministry for those suffering with moral injury by listening for themes related to moral injury and giving room for lament in cases of moral injury as a part of religious support mission during LSCO (Large Scale Combat Operations).
The MMMI course was conducted mostly at USA-IRL Graduate school that included the staff ride to the Mother Emmanual Church in Charleston, SC on July 18. The staff ride introduced students to a site of a mass shooting with a community that has endured trauma, PTSD, spiritual and moral injuries.
Students were given time to reflect upon the history leading up to, during, and after this event and how they might understand their own roles in similar circumstances based on the course material digested during this course. In-class training consisted of a mix of technology (e.g., movie clips), lessons and discussions facilitated by diverse faculty, hands-on table exercises, etc.
