Katherine Cull, Columbus City Neighborhood Liaison, recently visited with Maryhaven to learn more about the services and partnerships on the South Side.

They are located in Neighborhood Pride Centers in each region of Columbus. Liaisons work with residents, city officials, and civic organizations to empower residents to improve their neighborhoods.

With over 15 years of impactful experience across nonprofit, government, and community sectors in Columbus, we are so grateful for Katherine taking the time to learn more about Maryhaven’s mission.

This week, Maryhaven President Oyauma Garrison spoke at a Steering Committee Meeting at the Columbus City Council on Mental Health in BIPOC communities.

In an effort to break stigmas and create community, Oyauma brought awareness to the important topic, recognizing that 1 in 5 Franklin County adults experience a diagnosable mental health illness.

The BIPOC community in particular is impacted by mental illness, with su***de as the 2nd leading cause of death for Black/African Americans age 15-46.

The good news - conversations like this and support by so many groups, like Maryhaven, in Columbus means there is a reason for hope and healing.

Being able to talk about mental health issues and experiences is the number one sign of resiliency according to the STAR Resiliency Pyramid, and by having more conversations we shatter stigmas about receiving mental health treatments.

Together, we are stronger.

Whether addiction has impacted your life personally in some way, or you want to learn more to become an advocate for substance abuse, it all begins with awareness.

The more we know the more we can understand the disease of addiction, and how it's not a choice. By having conversations, creating awareness and educating our communities, we can help shatter stigmas and start sharing reasons to hope and ways to heal.

Maryhaven's mission since 1953 has been to help people restore their lives, and as Central Ohio’s #1 nonprofit addiction treatment center we are more committed than ever to helping support those that need it most.

Follow along as we share more data about the science of addiction.
