The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated their stance on breast milk storage to include mixing of freshly pumped and cooled milk in a 24 hour period!
Is anyone else as excited about this as I am knowing the pumping experience has just gotten a step easier?
From the AAP FAQ:
"Mothers should aim for cleanliness but realize milk is a biologic substance and full of probiotic and commensal bacteria. Hand washing, using clean or new containers, minimizing milk transfers (which waste fat and calories), and pumping directly into storage containers are recommended. Plastic or glass containers are fine, no evidence supports one over the other. Evidence suggests mothers can mix warm milk and cold, or even consider pooling milk from 24 hours together, which may help even out variability in nutrients due to pumping time or breast emptying (which influences fat content of the milk)."
Frequently Asked Questions In December 2020, a survey sent to the Section on Breastfeeding, Section on Administration and Practice Management, and Section on Early Career Physicians reveled these to be the top frequently asked questions about breastfeeding care.
We will be closed September 18 - 27.
Deadline for local orders to be processed prior to our closure is September 8. Shipped orders must arrive by September 17 and will be processed after September 27.
It's World Breastfeeding week!
We'd love to work with all parents to meet their breastfeeding goals by providing the ability to preserve breastmilk for the long term.
Freeze dried breastmilk protects the nutritional benefits including antibiotic and probiotic qualities of milk which begin to break down with long term freezing. It also stops lipase from breaking down fats, which can give the milk a soapy taste and smell.
It's World Breastfeeding Week!
Your baby tells you they are hungry by:
πΆ Bobbing their head; turning and opening their mouth
β Wriggling or clenching fists
ποΈ Putting their hands near their face or chewing fingers
π Licking their lips, opening and closing their mouth, making suckling noises
What was your experience in those early days? Did your journey start like you had expected?
In the hospital it is usually encouraged that moms breastfeed every 2-3 hours to nourish the baby and bring in a good future milk supply.
Itβs math: 8-12 feeds in 24 hours (ideal) = nursing every 2-3 hours ππ
Itβs a quick and easy way to get the message across that this baby needs to eat, and often.
Unfortunately, new parents seem think breastfeeding is going to be like the first picture (cereal)...all the feeds perfectly spaced out and all the same size. Every 2-3 hours. Easy. And the baby will sleep like an angel in between....
THIS IS NOT REALITY. In reality, your sweet newborn baby will have good feeds, short feeds, sleepy feeds, crappy feeds, and everything in between!
The visual of the blueberries is amazing because it shows how realistically feedings are at all different times and different lengths (bigger blueberries βΊοΈ). And did you count the berries?!? More than enough!
Yes, we want you to nurse every 2-3 hours, but the baby calls the shots. Less watching the clock β° and more watching for feeding cues πΆπ» π
Let's talk about lipase. This enzyme is in all breastmilk to some degree. It aids the body in breaking down the fats found in milk. Some milk has a higher concentration of lipase which can lead to faster breakdown of fats. The byproduct of this breakdown can lead to the milk smelling and/or tasting soapy. The breastmilk by no means is harmful to your baby, but there's a chance the milk will be rejected due to the change in taste and/or smell.
The longer the milk sits, whether frozen or fresh, increases the severity of the smell and taste change. This is because lipase thrives on the moisture in the milk.
This is where freeze drying comes in! By removing the water from breastmilk, the lipase is deactivated preventing further change. It can even make the milk more palatable to some babies.
In powder form it is also easier to include as a supplement in foods and bottles, which can hide any lingering taste.

Breastmilk can take up a lot of room in the freezer. Even when you're fastidiously making sure to freeze the bags flat and pack them neatly into blocks in Ziploc bags, soda cartons or other containers. Then there's the freezer shuffle as food and older milk is moved around to make room or provide easy access for rotation.
Freeze drying removes the need to keep the breastmilk frozen and removes the hassle of organizing freezer space. The powdered breastmilk packages are shelf stable and can be stored in a cool, dry place like canned goods. Because you're no longer having to keep the milk in a freezer, you're lowering your energy cost for maintaining it!

Freeze dried breastmilk can be packaged into single servings for the exact amount of breastmilk for a bottle. With easy to follow instructions, the powdered breastmilk is ready to be added to warmed water, which makes it ideal for caregivers to give your baby breastmilk while you're away.
Keep a packet with your care provider and not worry about swapping out frozen breastmilk. It will be there when your caregiver needs it.

Did you know the freeze drying process deactivates the lipsase enzyme which causes breastmilk to taste/smell like soap?
Freeze drying breastmilk is a great way to bring new life to your milk. Not only can the powder be added more easily to foods for a nutritional boost, but some babies are more likely to drink the reconstituted milk over thawed.
We are dedicated to freeze drying breast milk and turning it into powder. Powdered breast milk is shelf stable and requires no refrigeration making it perfect for traveling, moving, and for caregivers. Because it is shelf stable, there is no need to worry about its loss during power outages or other emergencies; it's easy to take with you.
The freeze drying process removes the water by gently heating the milk in a freezing vacuum leaving the nutritional, probiotic and antibiotic components intact. It can be stored longer than in a conventional deep freezer without losing its qualities for up to 3 years!
We are happy to get you started on this journey of preserving your breast milk!
