Today I was honored for my contributions to the community. I don’t get much recognition for things so when I do it is extra special. Thank you Jill Jackson and Charles Ewing for the honor of being on stage will legends in the community. Thank you for showing and sharing love. I’m starting to wonder where some of these repeatedly shared, problematic memes that spark gender wars originate from. Then I get curious about the purpose, impact and outcome in our online spaces. I notice a bunch of hot takes but wonder if there will ever be links or resources for folks that can use mental health or other supports. The research shows that social media posts can have triggering effects on our emotions while altering states of mind in harmful ways. While I can’t pinpoint where the memes with polarizing scenarios originate, I can deduce that the intent was not to unify or support. But then again, that may be the point. Don’t mind me though I’m just analyzing what I see across a multitude of social media sites. Working to build community and systems and emotional intelligence is what I do for a living and so I look at it from a different perspective. With all of that being said, how do we think our kids are navigating this space? 🤔

Next The Poet's Lounge event Loading…

After spending a week or so with siblings, nephews and cousins, I walk away with a word that is needed for all of us. “Edify.”

We pass off roasting sessions as lightening up the mood but in reality they are anti-therapeutic trauma triggering circles that when given enough alcohol and w**d can set the space aflame.

Edify. This pass week while witnessing The Almighty work miracles on my mom, (tremendous miracles that go beyond and of the doctors and RNs understanding by the way) I uncovered 7 business ideas, 5 dreams of progression, 3 hidden talents and unpacked a few ideas that lead to embracing therapy.

So what if instead of roasting, we talk, we discuss, we edify.

Does anyone else have similar experiences when family comes together?

We have millionaires, wealth and genius in the room only to leave more damaged, bruised and hurt with some substance ready to ease the pain.

I’m gonna stop there because this is turning long winded and the goal for 2024 is to get to the point.

Point is, I have the best family ever and I’m ready to tap into our potential.

I’ve been asked to bring back The Poet's Lounge which to be honest, I’d love to. It’s more about timing and energy. Back in 2009 we created the relationship questions to engage the audience between the poetry. It was a hit. People couldn’t wait to share and vibe and meet new people and learn.

I see a trend nowadays of podcasts and platforms that take on the relationship subject but with little regard to the audience but rather give hot takes on male female dating dynamics.

The trend is to give the most inflammatory, triggering, one sided take or question loaded with assumptions and riddled with stereotypes.
People go to war on these posts and podcasts and that does little benefit to anyone besides ratings and clicks.

The goal of the poet’s lounge has always been about healing, discussion, understanding, health and learning. This was intentional. I’d always call out counselors in the audience in case we had to navigate tough topics.

I’ve been talking to a few venues and can’t wait to have nuanced, nonjudgemental, honest and engaging conversation.

So stay tuned and in the meantime be careful engaging online with these minefields that do more wreckage than anything else.

Due to some of our amazing talent, organizers and venue staff having symptoms and or positive cases of Covid we are left with the unfortunate decision to postpone the show. Our prayers go out to all our friends and family and we look forward to bringing you the best in entertainment at a future date. I miss you all and can’t wait to provide you with an experience you won’t soon forget. We couldn’t in good conscious risk anyone’s health. Stay tuned for the new date…
